There are always teething troubles with new architecture, like I said before if it was me I would waited for the refresh, cheaper, faster, less teething troubles and more refined.

Certainly, and I'm all your's on that, but not everybody wants, or can wait that long. Upgrading as soon or late as the performance doesn't fit the user's demands anymore, there's little use in investing in a "EoL" platform... it's just that it's such a high priced gamble, almost as if going to a casino and betting a couple of hundreds on the roulette table... that doesn't make that much sense, does it?

Well I purchased my x79 late in its life, I have one of the best motherboards out there and a 5ghz cpu. So in my case it paid off, also fully watercooled will give me massive longevity. So buying an eol architecture isn't abad thing depending on what you do with it and how much potential it has for the future. Its a highend gaming rig which will not bottleneck any gpu cards for along time yet.

    Its a win for me.

So it's all good now? It's just I don't want to go to a gamble worth thousands of quid (the whole rig). There's no guarantee to get good clocks on an EoL platform either, and not everybody gets himself a 5GHz CPU, Vet :D

I guess there's little help than just spending money and hoping you get what you paid for, with probably having to RMA your CPU, mainboard, GPU and screen these days...

I must say that this new platform is really a lot of fun, a lot of variables while OC'ing and new things every day to test.
Not had this much fun OC'ing since the Gulftown relase in 2010.
If you're going to test this platform then go with a mobo with the 2011-3 OC-socket then you got CPU, cache and memory to clock so goo luck. :)

Mydog now that is a good 8 core CPU you have. Can you get your cache any higher like one to one.

Thanks, it's an OK 5960X from what I can see :)
4.7 GHz on cache is easy but 4.8 seems hard to reach atm and balancing memory and chache speed is the hard part.

Hey all. Can't get my Essence STX to work at all without dropping the PC into sleep mode, and waking it up again.

It seems a pretty common bug on x99 across different board manufacturers - has anyone seen a solution anywhere?

Thought that would be the case. This will be the first test of AsRock and how good their bios support is for me!

Well, I have to say im impressed with AsRocks support team!

I've been in contact with them over the last two days reporting a few bugs and they have been very quick to respond to all my emails with fixes or requests for more info so they can look into the problem, and best of all tonight they emailed me a BETA bios, that fixes almost all the bugs I reported including the x99 Soundcard issue I had with my STX!

Nice! Haven't heard that about ASrock so far, this rather improves my thinking about them in the not-literal-hardware part of their mainboards.

I was the same. And tbh, if there had been a wider choice of x99 mATX boards then i would not have bought this asrock one. Still the last couple of days have certainly improved my opinion of them!

Well my last gaming rig before the current one (before the X58/i7) had an ASrock mainboard, and I couldn't complain about it. I just thought, because they're not the top notch manufacturer, and certainly didn't supply all the drivers for their 8 year old mainboard for Win8.1 as I used it as my HTPC platform, they wouldn't really work on their bioses or support that much. Good to see I'm wrong :)

Think I missed out in the silicone lottery. My 5960x will not be stable at 4.3ghz at anything below 1.3v.l, I've tried everything, and that's even with the memory running at just 2133mhz. Most I can get out of it is 45mins of realbench before I get a bsod. Think I'm gonna have to roll the dice again and get another and hope I get better.

How much extra volts does it take to go from 4.2 > 4.3
