Gaming benchmarks: Ivy Bridge Core i7 hyperthreading test

Hyper-threading as we know now (nevermind Pentium 4 era) in games has been tested since the day Nehalem Lynnfield Core I5 arrived. In this benchmark we saw a direct comparison between equally clocked I5 750 and I7 920 processors.

GURU3D made similar comparisons in the past like this

These reviews, however contain too few games, so i am bringing this Core i7 VS Core i5 debate once again.

I own I7 3770 and i5 3570K processors, but in this BENCHMARK (not a CPU review mind you) i will simply use I7 3770 without HT as my reference Core i5. This is because I5 3570K has all of it's 4 core clocks at 3.8 GHz in turbo mode, while I7 3770 has only one core at 3.9 GHz in turbo mode, while other cores are lower. Also replacing processors takes time, and i have a very nasty cooler, that is very difficult to dismount...

20 games have been tested for this review. I am using 1920X1080 resolution, since this is the most popular mainstream resolution for mid-range cards like GTX760/GTX960, R9 270X/R9 370X and gamers do not play at 1024x768 rez. anyway despite the fact, that games are more VGA bound at 1920x1080 rez. Game settings are set to highest playable, so if a game does not score at least 40 FPS at highest settings, i lower the settings down. No AA is used in any game except Alan Wake, since AA can not be disabled in that game.

    Test setup

    Intel Core I7 3770
    2X4 GB DDR3 1600 MHz C9
    GeForce GTX760 OC 2 GB
    Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
    Forceware 355.81

I think HT do the difference with Online games, specially MMORPGs. I had the i5-3570k, now i have the i7-3770k and i notice a better performance on Aion, Guild Wars 2, Wildstar, Star Wars, when you're around with a lot of people.

Thanks for the information, really interesting, i hope new games use more threads. I'll try with AC: Unity.

I think that's it - multi player games tend to stress CPU much more than single player games. Every additional online player in the server is a new burden for a CPU. Also, playing online is not just about rendering the visuals, it's about consuming/exchanging packets, data, so it makes sense. However i do believe that there would not be any difference in single player of those games.

PS: mods, i am not sure why do i present all my reviews in the "video card" section even though most of them have nothing to do with video cards.. I always notice this later...

As someone who has had 6 cores, many i7's, FX 8120, many quads I can safely say this.
As long as the quad core is fast enough on ipc or high enough clock rate, you will see almost zero benifit from HyperThreading in single player games that are gpu bound.

Try those games in low res and low settings and you will the difference in HT vs no HT.

The only thing I have noticed is that with HT on is that the over all cpu load is lower vs just 4 cores.

BF4 is a huge attest to how HyperThreading can make a nice difference in online games.
The game imho feels smoother with it on. Lower cpu usuage, framerate is the same on average but the frame drops are smoother in explosions.

Thanks for that OP, ht is pretty much overrated when it comes to gaming, handy with video encoding though.

When it comes to gaming, ipc improvements and higher core clock is what matters, not HT.

    i5 = gaming
    i7 = video editing/rendering, streaming

You can try again by LostPlanet2

change jobthread=8 instead of default 4, its in cfg.ini (my documents) and you will see a noticeable change, same thing by RE5..

Although if you force max MSAA @ 760GTX then you will be gpu bottlenecked by default in any scenario.

    IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!

As per request by some members, i have redone all the benchmarks at lowest settings on 1024x768 resolution in order to disable possible GPU bottleneck.

As you can see, the results speak basically of the same pattern as in the highest settings benchmark. The only small difference might be Hitman Absolution slightly benefiting from HT.

However, notice that Batman Arkham Origins, Bioshock Infinite, Far Cry 3, Metro Last Light Redux suffered a penalty in minimal frame rates with HT on!!!

I now i have really proved that HT is worthless in gaming. If you did not believe me before, perhaps you do now.:)

Damn, how come the FX cpu's do really bad on hitman absolution when it scales with multiple cores like that?

Great stuff. One thing I would add is that in my experience, hyperthreading is only useful for gamers with dual cores (i3s and old i5s). I have tested a few i3s and they were very comparable to the i5 and i7 processors I have.

I think the bottom line is we only need 4 threads right now for gaming. 2/4 (cores/threads) and 4/4 processors can do the job admirably. Anything beyond that, 4/8, 6/12, 8/16 is essentially overkill for pure gaming purposes.

It's a little late but it might be interesting to run your 3770 in an i3 scenario (2/4, if it even can be done) just to verify what I've seen. I'm not sure why gamers skip the i3 as a choice in their cost conscious builds. They are pretty impressive performers for the price.

    Thanks OP, very useful info.

It will be interesting to see what happens when DX12 titles become more commonplace. The performance gain vs. DX11 is mainly due to multithreading so there i7's could show a bigger difference vs. i5's.

Though this matters mostly with drawcalls I think, which alone probably won't tax a modern quad core/thread CPU, at least so much to show a difference vs. 8-core/HT.

I always thought that the more overhead you have the more hyper-threading matters.

I am curious if adding a second gpu would make a difference.

Wrong choice of games. At least for most of them. Crysis 3, Witcher 3 show a huge difference for me, in regards of minimum fps.
Also Dragon Age Inquisition and Far Cry 4 should be tested.

Your benchmarks are way off for a GTX 760. Theres no way you get over 100fps lowest in Arkham Origins at 1080p highest settings with a 760. Absolutely no way. Same with your Witcher 3 scores. Not accurate at all. My X79 system was twice as good as yours is and I couldn't even get that. Do you have 2 760's?

Every single one of those benchmarks were not done with a single 760 or you're not telling the truth about the settings used.

Curious.. Have I missed something bigtime? Your scores basically contradict everything I know about 760's...

I made similar test with GTX970 oc 1500/8000(Gtx980 performance) and with cpu at 2.5ghz to neglect GPU bottlenect:
I recommending looking mainly at frametimes and comparable FPS because its far better than just fraps.
