My HDD started making sounds a few days ago and yesterday it has gotten louder. It started happening once I started deleting a ton of files off of it because I was trying to clean it up without formatting it.

I know this Caviar Black is over five years old now, so it's time to set it free. Just need to save up for a 500GB SSD to replace my 640GB HDD....

If its making any kind of strange noise, assume its dead and get your data off asap.

If that noise is your hard drive I'd say not long and quite frankly don't know why it's still running.Get what you can from it now.

Strange, the noise has stopped after I backed up all my music...will continue to back up stuff though. Too poor at the moment to afford a new SSD.

Back up everything and change HDD. It will die really soon.

Not necessarily. Could die in a day, or two years from now. Without knowing the details of the malfunction, it's hard to say.

have you looked on any of the free defrag programs that can tell you your drivers health status?

If it's making strange noises then it's already dying...

    Maybe it's pre-April Fool's Day trolling you :p?

Honestly, I'll just get a new drive, it's not worth it by guessing.

I had that by one WD 200gb, few times it was really bad, i decided to remove all stuff from it and use it only for games, over time it stopped (sounded like clicks), i defragged it a couple of times and its still running fine although it gets quite hot 43-45C when under load.

Now that's forward thinking, lmao. But congrats on finding employment. In my case it's easy to forget just how lucky I am to be consistently employed.
