It's called Optimus, it's to save battery and lower power consumption.

Lucky you - several new drivers have been without Optimus support - but the latest seems to have it again.

Artifact is a term used to refer to when a video card is not working properly. Generally it is actually the on screen glitches on the monitor itself that you would see that is the result as being called artifact. It could be caused by overheating or improper drivers or simply the video card failing when used for an enormous amount of time.

It can sometimes be little dots all over the place, or you get lines smearing across the screen, weird colours all over the place, etc.
