Well, several network updates later and my poor little Samsung Transform Ultra is working very well now. Not sure what the updates have to do with the overall operation of the phone but throughout the updates over the last couple weeks it's gone for being extremely slow to showing performance on par with my old HTC Trophy. Firmware is 2.3.7 now according to the phone info screen.
