Gigabyte R9 380 4GB crashes to black screen!

Another thing I noticed. I f I downclock card to 700Mhz it works in games, but I tried that downclocked settings in furmark and it crashed to black screen.

Well after trying some tests I discovered stresstest works great if I turn anti-aliasing on, It works also on default core and memory values. Does this crashing have something to do with anti-aliasing?

 

Well I just moved away from 2x R9 380 4gb cards in crossfire and I can tell you I had a ton of problems as well. I would get a black screen with "no signal" quite often. With the newer drivers it seemed like it was mostly fixed but man, it was a real pain. I RMA'd both cards, tried 2 different power supplies, ran each card individually (took 1 out and ran it), different drivers....There have been multiple threads on AMD's forums about it, and tons of threads on other sites too.

As far as anti aliasing is concerned, I could get Far Cry 3 to crash in a matter of minutes if I put the AA to 8x, but it would do it in a ton of games no matter what settings I used.

As I said, the newer drivers seemed to mostly fix the issue, but it would seem that almost everyone with the problem is running a 380.

Getting rid of those cards was 50% "I hate black screens with no signal," and 50% "I hate crossfire, when did multi-gpu start sucking so bad?"

 

Exactly what I was talking about. This series of cards is terrible. Problems all over the place lasting for quite some time now, but guys in AMD didnt do anything about it. Amateurs all the way. Are you happy with your new gpu?

 

Very happy. This Fury (non X) benchmarks almost identical to 380 crossfire but without any of the problems, not to mention it works in ALL games instead of the few that actually worked with crossfire. Games that did support crossfire well (which was very few) like Battlefield 4 saw a slight loss in fps but overall consistency with fps is much, much improved. So in a nutshell, I am getting double the performance in 90% of my games. The other 10% is roughly the same or slightly lower and its because crossfire was actually supported.

As far as general issues go- I have not had a single problem with this card except some moderate coil whine but luckily it seems like it's only there when games are loading and not while playing. I have had many a gpu and have had coil whine with most. *shrug* Oh well.

I swore up and down that I would never do AMD again after the 380 fiasco (#firstworldproblems) but here I am, with another AMD card. The performance always seem to improve over time and their drivers keep getting better and better. I am not disappointed.

Some new updates. I sent this gpu to RMA. Waited 3 weeks to get it as it was supposed to be sent to official Gigabyte service. Put the card in boom same black screen Only difference is that now I tried to run Furmark benchmark which is heavy on gpus and it ran with no issues at all. Card came to 70 degrees on heavy load. Why the hell this thing crashes only in games and not in benchmark?

 

the days of using furmark as the end all stability tool are long gone...just the way it is, because games stress the hardware in different ways....does the card still have issues with case open and gpu fan set to 100%?

 

You can open gpu-z and tick the 'log to file' option.
So when you reboot after the crash, you can see what was the reached temperature of your vga when the black screen occurred.

How old is your psu ?

 

Cant believe it. After weeks of testing and pulling my hair I think I finally found the fix. I modded gpu bios and raised the GPU voltage a little with tonga bios editor and now it works like a charm. The same thing with afterburner didnt work but it works with modded bios.

 

Just to make sure I did it right cause I am not very knowledgable in that department. I googled some post from one miner and he did it this way. I am posting a picture what I switched in bios and card works. Is this the right way or can this be done better?

My R9 290 was working until I got the same issue being this week. Took several days to clean out. Never could overclock my system, but I finally find out how to overclock my i5 to 4+ ghz from 3~ ghz and overclock my r290 from defaults now pushing it to 1+ ghz with stability by manually setting volts. Resolved most of the issues hopefully. Not sure if the random pauses might come back.

 

Well i sent mine back to rma. Not going to bother with bios modz and then fry the card and void warranty. I would have rma it as it might do it down the road again.
