    Hi.
Here is what I have at the moment.
    Asus p5b deluxe
    core 2 quad q9550
    4gb ddr 2 5300
    600w psu
    amd radeon 5850

I use my pc exclusively for gaming.

I only have enough money to either upgrade my motherboard/cpu/ram, or get a GTX 1080.

I need a bit of advice as to which would be the better option to go with first?
Also if I go with the GTX 1080 would it be ok in my old motherboard?
    Alan

Not a great choice either way.

If it were my money I would dump the investment into an i5 CPU motherboard bundle, with 8/16GB of RAM, and an Inno/Palit GTX 1070.

Push come to shove go for the GTX 1080.

I would definitely go for the new motherboard, RAM and CPU and then put whatever is left toward buying a new graphics card. It doesn't have to be a GTX 1080, which costs £630+ here in the UK, you can buy a cheaper GTX 1070 or even 1060 depending on whether you plan to game at 1080p, 1440p or 4K. I suspect that your current system would hold back performance of the GTX 1080 personally.

I agree with the guys get urself a solid foundation then work your way up to a good gaming (graphics card) ie Gtx 980 ti, 970,1070, r9 290x, and so forth....

A good example would be wearing a custom tailored suit with Jogging shoes, Ewwww! haha.

sell what you have now on ebay , you will get something for it and put it towards the upgrade .
Personally if i was you and had 600 to 700 budget it would go like this ,
Keep power supply if its a good quality one
    Z170X-Gaming 3 - Intel Core i5 6600K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£30 Saving**
    https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...rboard-bundle-30-pounds-saving-bu-029-gi.html
    £324.98

    Fury Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 PC4-17000C14 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (HX421C14FBK2/8)
    https://www.overclockers.co.uk/king...annel-kit-black-hx421c14fbk2-8-my-244-ks.html
you can add another kit when you have more money to spare and top it up to 16gb
    £35.99

GeForce GTX 1060 GT OC 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
    https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-32s-ms.html
    £249.00

grand total about 608.98 uk pounds job done all this for the same if not cheaper price than a gtx 1080 and if your gaming @1920x1080 you don't need anything more , plus the cpu will overclock very nicely indeed ...

I would do something like this and replace your full PC Plus you can still upgrade again later on again if you wish to with intel's next offering as its using the same socket 1151
or pop a i7 in if you have the cash ...

PS you will need a new CPU cooler as i don't think it comes with one so stick another 35 pounds for a cheap one,:banana: but it will give you the headroom for some overclocking

He also has to make sure his PSU can handle the new CPU low power states

yes very true as ive got a feeling its old , so maybe add another 50 to 80 pounds for a 600w PSU so with a PSU we are just getting to the 700 uk pounds mark for a full PC upgrade which will be really capable of playing the latest greatest pc games for sometime to come

    Thanks for all the information.
I know I have enough to get a whole setup but, as this has to last me many years I want to go big, so I have decided to go with the i7 6700k, 32 gigs of ddr 4 @3200mhz, m.2 ssd and the msi z170a pro carbon motherboard and of course a cooler and psu.

I think I will go for the mobo/cpu/ram first then. I still want a gtx 1080 though for future proofing.
I will be able to get the rest of the setup within the next couple of months, thats why I was wondering if I would get a good gpu boost by getting the gtx 1080 first, sticking it my old setup and then upgrading the rest a little later, or getting the mobo/cpu/ram first and putting my old gpu in it until I get the 1080.
    Thanks.

My suggestion is to upgrade MB/CPU/RAM instead of a gtx1080. You will get a massive bottleneck if you get a 1080. I had xeon x5690 @4.4ghz and 1080's sli. Had performance issues (I.E. same 3dmark score as a 980Ti). it was down to cpu. Upgraded to 6700K and @stock there is still a bottleneck. Had to Oc to 4.6ghz to get performance up.
