Windows 8 / 8.1 Scaling (GPU / Display)

While i was trying out a lot different options,
I was wondering myself about the nVidia scaling setting.

I can choose between aspect ratio, fullscreen and no scaling at all
and it works flawlessly.

BUT, i can't choose between GPU and display!
GPU is on by default and there is no other option in that rolldown menu.
No display. And i know for sure, that the option is available within Windows 7 while using the same nVidia driver and even the same display inf.

What the ****?

I was tired of googling around as I got only stupid results, unanswered questions or other stuff which I absolutely didn't care for. And porn.

Tried different driver branches.
Any thoughts why this function is unavailable under Windows 8 / 8.1 ?
Bug? nVidia doesn't care because no one else is whining about that?
Registry hack to enable it?

 

Do you have a monitor with dual link DVI ?

 

Dude, it's working on Windows 7, so it's not about the cable.

 

I could be, because for me its working in windows 8.1 same as win7?

 

I use the scaling option, I'm on 8.1 and it was there on 8 as well. Clean install drivers maybe?

 

Fake calibrate color in wcs .once finalize revert to your usual setting .if its like AMD this should have disabled the GPU version

 

Yeah the scaling option is there, but only GPU. The control panel won't let me switch to let the display do the job, like in the OS before that.

No, my rig is clean as it can be. In fact i know that even a fresh 8.1 install wouldn't make a difference. Why? Because i've spotted that long before (within my countless windows installs) that i couldn't use the Display for my scaling in 8 and upwards but it didn't matter back then and thought that it may be a bug or something that could be fixed with some manual methods.

Now it pisses me off and since i couldn't find anything i was pretty sure that this would be the right address. But instead you're insulting my brain.

Ofc it is a Dual Link DVI cable! Otherwise it wouldn't be available / worked with W7. Pretty clear, isn't it?
It's an Benq XL2411T (144hz) connected to my GTX580.

What does the Colour system have to do with this?
I was curious, but it didn't change anything at all. Still no display scaling available, just GPU.

i had this issue also, i believe it has to do with the EDID when the display reports its capabilities to the pc on connecting.

There was a thread somewhere (might have been here or nvidia forums) about using custom EDID to fix another problem (i think chroma subsampling or full range RGB color) but i think this problem can be fixed by it also.

Actually come to think of it i think they talk about this in the downsampling thread also.

Another guy (and me obviously after few hours googling) came to the conclusion that this is a weird issue only for users of an BenQ XL2411t and an ASUS VG248QE since they share the same panel.

So i got angry and took a long shot with old 296.10 on Windows 8.1 (x64 to be exact) - Picture says more than thousand words.



So, it IS some kind of an issue. Not with all displays obviously but with Windows 7 i can use the latest drivers and still get the display scaling.

How do i know it works? If it's activated, and only then, the menu in my monitor is accessable for configuring the scaling even further. With GPU it's greyed out and i can't change anything at all.

Have to check for the latest driver which can use this properly. Maybe i can upgrade from this one to the latest and keep this one if i don't reset profiles and stuff. Well, maybe tomorrow. Enough for today.

I have to revert. Actually this may be in fact true.
But since i only had to deal with it on HDMI displays
and didn't want to have some dirty method, also while using same display drivers / monitor drivers for both systems - so it was kind of unlikely.

With the Phoenix EDID tool i get a 'Invalid EDID' error as soon as i try to extract the EDID from the registry. I thought it may be too old for W8.1 - but on the other hand it may be something different.

How did i get here?

Well, I've used the Strobelight Tool to activate Lightboost.

Guess what. As soon as i used it to add the strobing refreshrates i couldn't use the option anymore. It was gone again so i had to reset my display with the strobelight tool and did a fresh install of 296.10 again. It was back again. Somebody could say that this may be related to Lightboost then, but since i use 144hz (no LB) for the desktop, while 120hz (LB) for the game it shouldn't disappear like a bitch and be still selectable.

No, I think I have to talk to ToastyX to understand what exactly is being changed, so i can look into that and may be able to fix this for latest drivers in the registry, too. Maybe someone else has knowledge about this?

Ok, first sorry about not trusting you, it seems indeed its working on windows 7. Just loaded an old HDD with windows 7 in it, and i have both GPU and Display scaling there.

Then all remains is the OS, not the nvidia driver. You could ask MS why they did this on windows 8/8.1 if you want.

But i really dunno why you need display instead of GPU...


I have the same monitor as you XL2411T, and i remember when i used some 60Hz monitors on windows 8 i HAD the Display scaling, on windows 8, i repeat. So seems something about those 144Hz monitors and windows 8, not letting them to have Display scale.

 

He want it, maybe he don't like the image quality that scaling by GPU?
