Hi, I'm planning to build a big NAS for home use. It would include 10 3.5 WD RED disks (4TB) + 2 2.5" SSD drives (for cache). All of this will be powered using FreeNAS. The only thing that I'm still puzzled about - is what size (in terms of Watt) PSU do I need to power such a NAS. Any suggestions?
Not very big. A good 300 W PSU should do it quite well... as a bare minimum. Don't cheap out though, you would probably have to get at least 450 W to 500 W PSU to get an 'okay' one. I'd try and at least go for gold 80 Plus certification. For instance, Corsair VS series does have a 350W, but that can't even manage the lowest 80 Plus level.
CPU also need to be fed. Since you running it 24/7 good PSU will save power. I think this one could be ideal, but pricy. http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-450-W...F8&qid=1395975172&sr=1-3&keywords=corsair+psu [edit]If you looking for saving now as much as possbile, CX series might be solution.
