I have a main PC I use for games and a decent laptop for general stuff.

Main PC is i7 with a GTX 960 and 16gb ram
Laptop is i5 with 8gb ram

    Both on windows 10

Is there a way to start a game up on my main PC and then transfer control and display to my laptop, so I am essentially using the power of my main PC to play games on my laptop?

Via steam's in home streaming, for instance. Or twitch maybe, or similar things like open broadcasting software (OBS). Personally I haven't tried anything too similar.

I use steam and it is awesome I play games with all the eye candy at max on my laptop that it could never play with the feeble built in Intel/nvidia GPUs

Only problem is, not all games let themselves be streamed via steam (non steam games mostly, like for instance BF4).

No, never had the idea to be honest. But a tempting one indeed, might have to try that out to let my buddies watch as I game BF4 ;)

I have tried both steam streaming and moonlight (android) which uses nvidia share and steam is much better. Steam also supports more game titles..

I use Steam In-Home streaming and I love it.

Now I have all my hardware on a 1gb LAN connection and it does pretty well with that, so make sure you have it on a wired connection at least.

That is main problem with steam's streaming.
You have to have it on LAN, otherwise it will not even start. I have all mobile devices on wifi (that means NAT) and stationary ones on LAN so they have public IPs.

I can reprogram router to put all devices onto public access (even wifi), but I have only 3 public IPs and that's kind of problem.

Well both my computers are running WLAN via my router, and it works flawlessly so far. At least streaming from one rig to another (my gaming rig to my HTPC) works via WLAN.

I am inspired by this thread to try some of these things out, especially porting to my HTPC. I recently got my daughter one of those Shield tablets; maybe she'll let me touch that someday to see how that mixes in. :nerd:

You may want to try eGPU.

I decided to try Steam in home streaming from my gaming rig to my Windows tablet. Both machines run Windows 10 Home with the desktop being 64 bit and the tablet 32 bit. The tablet is an RCA W101v2 10" 2 in 1 with an Intel Atom Bay Trail Z3735F quad core and Intel HD graphics. On it's own it is nowhere near capable of playing the games that I streamed to it but they all worked pretty well. I tried Skyrim, Project Cars, Black Mesa,
and The Witcher 3. Even though Witcher 3 is the GOG version and only linked to through Steam, it worked as well as the others. It was also streamed through WLAN. The desktop is wired but the tablet is wireless.
