Default RTSS causes Afterburner to close/crash when trying to access it - 08-12-2017, 12:42 | posts: 138

Recent Windows Update(from this past week) hit my system, logged on to find RTSS giving an error about application not being compatible bla bla.
Invariably I uninstalled it and Afterburner, got the newest versions and now two things were happening :

1. MSI Afterburner shows it's details in system tray, though if you hover over or try to access the program, it crashes/closes.

2. RTSS was still kicking out the error

I found the special 700Beta19 RTSS which stopped the compatibility error, yet Afterburner still closes.

Confirmed that RTSS is related as after uninstalling both completely and reinstalling Afterburner, it works fine. Once RTSS is back on the system, Afterburner crashes again.

BTW, search function is broken before anyone complains

Tried reinstalling your graphics driver?

Use DDU to remove it in safemode > reboot to normal mode to reinstall

Update to beta 7 solved it for me.

Probably but since I don't really need betas usually I updated to the one that worked and left it. I only said that because last week there was a windows update that broke compatibility for the version I was on and that one solved it for me.

At the time of writing, we are on MSI Afterburner 4.4.0.10473 Beta 16, and RTSS 7.7.0.14866 Beta 28.

You can find downloads from Unwinder the devoloper of MSI Afterburner in the RTSS Beta thread.

I recommend running DDU to clean your drivers and fresh installing 385.28 WHQL

You can extract the installer with 7-zip and delete these folders if you want a driver only (plus NVCP) install for minimal bloatware and maximum performance. I do it with a .bat file. It's named DeleteNvidiaCrap.bat and contains the following text. Just drop it in and double click it.

Code:
rd /s /q Display.Optimus
rd /s /q Display.NView
rd /s /q Display.Update
rd /s /q GFExperience
rd /s /q GFExperience.NvStreamSrv
rd /s /q GfExperienceService
rd /s /q HDAudio
rd /s /q LEDVisualizer
rd /s /q Miracast.VirtualAudio
rd /s /q MS.NET
rd /s /q MSVCRT
rd /s /q Network.Service
rd /s /q nodejs
rd /s /q NV3DVision
rd /s /q NV3DVisionUSB.Driver
rd /s /q NvBackend
rd /s /q NvCamera
rd /s /q NvContainer
rd /s /q NvTelemetry
rd /s /q NVWMI

I'll give some of these a try but would also like to know if it's expected behavior, am I alone and if not, what's going to happen moving forward?

I mean I literally woke up and all that had changed from the night before, was a forced updated for Windows.

Surely this is not the user's responsibility to 'fix.'

What you expecting it to update automagically when a windows update fries it? Unwinder can't be expected to know that an update will have that effect. There has been updates since/betas since that have solved different issues.I don't bother with the betas usually unless something breaks like it did this time. Then it was no trouble figuring it out.

You killed your chances to get any reply right in the first posting by claiming that search is broken. And killed it is twice now. Surely, it is my obligation to fix everythin for you Closed.
