"With end-to-end encryption, only the sender and receiver can read the contents of a message. "
And Google is doing this? Pfft.

I'm sure the NSA will have a copy of all encryption keys.

Beat me to it, Andrew LB!
Can't see the NSA sitting idly by and allowing us to post what the hell we like in emails.
They'll have some way of reading our stuff, or Google, and gmail will be right up to their lips in it.
Perhaps we should all begin polishing up our letter-writing abilities once more.

They're implementing PGP which has been around for years: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy

Only they're dumbing it down so even your mother could use it. PGP is a user made key that only the user knows until they share it with another person. So you send the mail encrypted and only people that know your password can open it.

Reality is they're probably competing with other email providers, such as Startmail, CounterMail, Darkmail and others which are all more privacy based and already either offer, or plan to use PGP once they're up and running.

It's not bad any company tries to implement PGP- it's good. But if they're pitching it to "combat NSA spying" (which it will do in all honesty) it's more just a marketing move however. Snowden is the pitch for any privacy based thing these days. But only trust the free/open source offers.
