    Hi guys,
I've just had to refresh (think that's what it's called) my windows 8.1 install and it went to a very early state.

But when installing the amd driver, 14.9.2 I think most current beta in the download section, it gets to the point where it changes to the monitors native resolution, then the screen goes black.

I couldn't find away out of this so I started again thinking it didn't like my 2nd monitor or some choice I made in install.

2nd time I unplugged 2nd monitor and went with express install and it's done the same thing.

Any idea what I can do? It's tough when you literally can't see whats gone wrong.

    Cheers

I personally would not trust system restore or whatever they changed the name to in Win8/8.1.

It is generally very buggy and only good enough to get the computer back into a somewhat workable state. System restore has been this way ever since it first came out.

I would back up all your needed files, and then reinstall from scratch (wipe the drive).

Hey man I had this issue for the longest time. You need to upgrade the vBIOS which will fix everything:

here are the tools you need to flash, there are instructions in there too.

I backed everything up and reinstalled and it's done the same thing again. Sometimes I can reboot and get picture back so I tried other driver versions. But can't get any to work

There seems to be countless tales of black screens with amd drivers online

    But thanks anyway.

Can't even get pc to boot without going to black screen now.

Is there a way to get into safe mode on 8.1?

Try different drivers. The latest ones seem to have a few bugs.

    I'm using 14.7 r3....

    Reinstalling Windows is ridiculous.

    Hey guys,

Sorry for my slightly garbled posts yesterday. I was tired, fed up and trying to research the problem on my phone.

I eventually worked out that I used Cat 14.4 when I built the system in August.

Also worked out how to boot into Safe Mode (Yay!) I found I needed the Windows DVD.

So I've installed 14.4 as I don't really have the time to work out the BIOS update. But thanks for the pointer.

    Things seem to run now.

Now just the labourious task of putting everything back on. Always takes me ages :(

    Thanks

14.4 was the only stable driver for my 290 too

Weirdly, I gave it to my nephew when I got this card and he's running 14.9s with no issues - must be more than GPU related

And just remembered he's running Win 7 lol

You don't need the Windows DVD to enter safe mode. Just tap F8 then select safe mode or VGA mode (which loads basic video drivers).

On some boards pressing F8 too early will load the BIOS boot menu, so the trick is to get the timing right.

I had very similar problem. After messing with drivers, files, reinstallation, etc. i found out the reason was faulty hdmi cable. I replaced the cable with new one and everything works fine now.

The only solution that worked for me so far was install the 14.4 driver and update to 14.7 RC3 .

I found the Windows DVD did work on 8.1.

Also something like 2 bad shut downs will give you the option on boot.

I had looked at those other methods, most need your PC working in the first place and I had a black screen :)

Also found the F8 method didn't work for me, maybe my SSD or UFEI.

    Anyways...

Now updated BIOS to 2012 and then tried Cat 14.11.2 it worked.

    Hurrah!

    Thanks all.
