We look at the Intel Core i5 7600K processor, a respin from Intel based on the 14nm node; these processors are more energy friendly. For this review we look at the performance of this processor in a w...

Is still article still work in progress? I can't see any game results , but other tests has them.

Awesome! Thanks for the 1440p results. Odd so many review sites still ignore this now its become a common gaming res.

A 5Ghz reached? Is this a cherry picked chip or we can expect higher overclocks compared to Skylake?

Anyway, despite great performance that is i5 offering im sceptical quad-cores life span will be over as soon Zen is out.

Is there any reason openhardwaremonitor, which can show CPU power consumption can't be used to estimate?

The problem with these 4C/4T and 4C/8T chips is that we are already starting to have games where there is very good threading, and we see games scaling for more than 8 threads, even under DX11 (Watchdogs 2, Division etc). And we are all the time headed towards more multithreaded applications (slowly yes, but still heading).

These gametests really show it very well. In games where single threaded performance is the limiting factor, this I5 is even fastest of tested processors. But when game actually has a lot of cpu load which gets spread on multiple threads, it simply chokes.

I find it very risky invest to go for such "low" thread counts when investing into new cpu, that you expect to last next couple of years, when already we have games that don't work optimally with 4C/8T cpu.

I really would have wished that Intel would have scrapped their current I3 lineup and made 4C/4T their new low tier. I very much think I'm not the only one hoping that.

    Hi Hilbert

I have to disagree with your comment that there has been no IPC changes since sandy bridge.
Sure from haswell up there not much change and for sure from broadwell to skylake, it is the same, but from sandy to ivy bridge and from ivy to haswell there "about" 10% on each step.
example the CPU-Z single core test ,I can run 4.4ghz and only get 1909 so I am not close to anything 6xxx+.
At 4200 i only get 1823 so far from 2135.

So while I agree last few not much in IPC, there has been in past after Sandy bridge, not huge but small increase.

Anyway, good to see it OC a little better.

At this stage in time 4C/4T or 2C/2T should NOT exist anymore in Intel's offer.
SMT should be available on ALL their CPU's no matter what.

Their product distribution for consumers should look like:

    Core i3 - Low Power = 2C/4T perf/w optimized, locked multiplier
    Core i3 K - Performance = 2C/4T higher boost + unlocked

    Core i5 - Low Power - 4C/8T perf/w optimized, locked
    Core i5 K - Performance = 4C/8T higher boost + unlocked

    Core i7 - Low(er) Power - 6C/12T perf/w, locked
    Core i7 K - Performance = 6C/12T or 8C/16T unlocked
Core i7 X - Performance = 10C/20T unlocked, fastest thing you can buy

Current distribution doesn't make any sense anymore after all these years of "the same"

    BOOO Intel.
Doesn't matter how good or bad Zen will be, I will buy one just to clear this stale air coming from Intel.

I'll look that up and reword a little, as it should read there is are not any big IPC perf change. I have added some other processors on IPC. It's roughly 10% ever since Haswell towards Skylake/Kaby Lake.

That is probably how Cannonlake will look like.

I agree with you. I think in these days Hyper Threading or SMT should be a standard feature on all Core i5 quad core CPUs and the mainstream Core i7s should have minimum 6 cores with SMT enabled. Due to Intel's greed consumers are unable to satisfy their performance requirements. Due to lack of substantial performance upgrade for the same price people won't upgrade their PCs every few years which was the case till 5 years ago.

No one should be getting another quad-core if they already own one.

I mean who in the right mind would upgrade their Sandy i5/i7 to Kaby i5/i7? That's just a waste. Only upgrade path would something like X99 and 5820k or 6850k.

Cannonlake will again change nothing in that regard, maybe Coffee Lake.

Cant wait to see how Zen finaly changes the future.

Yeh, its also little tricky testing as while the CPU-Z is single threaded you'll use almost all cores (on i5) and the core frequency steps have changed to over yrs (speedstep/turbo).

    Anyway, good review.

Since "Bench" marketing optimizes lastest generations is better see real world comparisons were Intel does'nt get more than 5% uplit generation x generation

If this continĂșes AMD will get Kabylake IPC in less than 2 year with Zen+

Giving so much money for the same product when you already own an i5/i7 Sandy and onwards is just money toss in the trash can. It's a shame. It's the same product with just few cherries on top and a higher price. Only Ryzen can be a real upgrade unless AMD screw this a la Bulldozer style. I hope they won't.

The problem is most general purpose app don't need a lot of core for general stuff (web browser, email, excel etc ).
So if they did go i5= 4/8threads and moved i7 to 6/12, they still need clock speed per core or system doesn't feel responsive.

For power users and workstation type work (photoshop, 3d rendering , vidio etc) then it shows and paysoff.
Now if they can keep core freq up even on 6 or 8 core thats when it will be mainstream type cpu IMO.
We are probably getting close to this, maybe 10nm will bring it closer.

How's that, you really think AMD will have another new cpu architecture so fast ?
Even if they do good with Zen there R/D is slow, I bet it be another 3-4yrs before we see next one, if it does good.
Now that doesn't say there won't be newer ones out but just there be very similar to Zen for a while IMO.
