Windows 8.1 August update now available for manual download

    Download
    x86 and X64

As previously announced, the Windows 8.1 August update includes these new additions:

    • Precision touchpad improvements – three new end-user settings have been added: Leave touch pad on when a mouse is connected; allow right-clicks on the touchpad; double-tap and drag.
    • Miracast Receive – exposes a set of Wi-Fi direct APIs for Independent Hardware Vendor (IHV) drivers or OEM drivers to develop Windows 32-bit applications that run on all supported x86-based or x64-based versions of Windows 8.1, enabling the computer as a Miracast receiver.
    • Minimizing login prompts for SharePoint Online – reduces the number of prompts with federated use in accessing SharePoint Online sites. If you select the "Keep me signed in" check box when you log on for the first time, you will not see prompts for successive access to that SharePoint Online site.

Well, nothing is immediately noticeably different after the updates, the bullet point changes are N/A to me anyway

I had 2 systems show 14 + 1 optional and another system show 13 + 1 optional. Not sure which update was missing from the oddball system's list.

I installed this last night no problems, but the updates prior to that reeked havoc on my pc.

My pc wouldn't configure the updates. stuck at 12% or 30%. Had to go through hell just to sort it out.

Turns out it was the audio drivers. Had to do a fresh windows install several times until I discovered that.

    Very annoying.

I have just had my first BSOD in god knows how long after this update.

Every time I opened a webpage it would scroll down to the bottom and I could highlight anything, I got the BSOD a minute or two later.

    The error code was "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED"

Wow so many changes and 98% don't apply to anything I do or have. The remaining 2% that do have never exhibited any problems.

I can give you an official ISO with Update 1 integrated if you need it, should make things easier the next time.

Same here, I was under the impression it was just placebo!

The metadata being read only while searching bug from 8.1.0 is still present unfortunately. I hope it gets fixed before the next version of Windows gets a preview.

That's an error with a kernel mode program or driver. By program it would be something like an antivirus etc. Going by your description of what is happening it is quite possibly display driver related.

    No such experience for me...

Still could be seeing as there aren't any others posting of such experiences. I haven't noticed any such improvement in responsiveness.

The last time I saw that one was with Windows 2000 on my Asus A7N8X-X, when my Barton 3000+ temp got too high.
Then I looked down and saw that my air conditioner duct became detached. (Was at 2.4 or 2.3 when just playing Gran Turismo 2, lol, that's not something that would even push it hard!)

(I was wondering if Microsoft eliminated that code, too, because Microsoft has before decided to change the error message for the same thing on Vista and later.)

It may be a sign of core temps being too high when OC'ing the CPU.

Watch out with this one guys, it could easily BREAK your system. I've had 7 PC's in the past 24 hours being update raped by this. Only way to recover is a backup or system restore. It has officialy been confirmed by M$ too :D
