Not really, for £900 you can have 290x crossfire, 4gb (plenty for 1440p, even 4k) and if you really make shaders that important, it comes with 5632 of those.

Honestly, I'd do the same if I was upgrading, but still, £1100 for a 295x2 isn't that overpriced considering what you get.

nah, for £900 you can have 290x Crossfire, 4gb is enough for 1440p and 4k, better performance, Crossfire scales better also noticed recently it works in some games that don't work with SLI. Don't know why shaders are important, but ok, 290x Crossfire comes with 5632 of them.

Lol, I run 3gb at 1440p and I max AA everywhere I can. Never had a single issue getting anywhere near the 3gb limit. 4gb gives you a buffer.

780 6gb sli will be out of gpu muscle way before you get anywhere near 4gb vram usage.

Seriously what game are you playing that exceeds 4GB of ram? or even 3? Battlefield 4 UHD @ 4xMSAA just exceeds 3GB on a Titan. If there is some game out there that is hitting over 4GB of ram without AA then that game is probably terrible.

Apparently he lives in a world where anything less than 6GB is garbage and not future proof.

    imo bs.

I've seen with my own eyes a 760 do 75fps 1080 using 3gb+. I seen it and I was there.
max the textures and lower all the other graphics options in-game if it helps you see what we're talking about.
I've heard the argument before, ive done the google search vram usage thing too.

No one sees what you're talking about because it doesn't happen in any normal usage scenario. Unless you're dumping 8K/4K textures literally everywhere in a game like Skyrim and loading the entire map into memory it's not happening. Sorry. Even with all the main texture mods (STEP) at 4/2K my skyrim just touches 2GB, let alone 3.

As I said Battlefield 4, arguably one of the best looking games out, doesn't even hit 3GB until you up the resolution to 4K UHD and put 4xMSAA at the highest graphics settings.

So if you're playing some game that hits 3GB usage at 1080p or even 1440p that game is either doing something very wrong or you are.

You've also yet to mention where you've seen this, so what game is this?

I seen it in Daylight, folks also report huge usage in titanfall.
the future games made for new concoles for ex. the unreal 4 games I see going beyond 3gb easily.
around 6 months from now 2gb is gonna be the new 1gb, totally.

You've not played Titanfall with "Insane" Textures set then, unless AMD uses less VRAM on that game than NVidia. It's the ONLY game of mine that's used all the 3GB VRAM of my card. (Skyrim in 2nd place with just a couple of mods & Bethseda High Texture pack hits 2.2GB VRAM occasionally). This is all at a lowly 1600x900 resolution of my laptop panel. (Most games using less than 1.5GB VRAM, and then a few approaching 2GB VRAM apart from the Titanfall & Skyrim outliers that I mentioned earlier).

fps has nothing to do with vram usage. I would be worried if you saw it and weren't there btw.

you've googled things, that's fair play. Bioshock also went well over 2gb vram usage, yet a gtx 570 ran it maxed no problem. You're telling yourself 4gb isn't enough. I'm laughing.

You can do as much research as you want, I have 3gb of vram and a sh1tton of gpu muscle behind it so I do throw AA at games. I've never had a single "lack of vram" issue. If you really think you need 6gb of vram on a 780, you should save that money and use it on something else you know a little bit more about. You're reasonably new to gaming and you are very naive if you think you need more than 4gb. Especially if you game at 1080p (that's what you're running, right?)

I think 4gb is fine btw, my 'without aa' comment was a joke cause I use none.

yeah, I have both of those games. I run skyrim with a plethora of mods and the game flies on a 3gb 7950. at 1440p. Anyway, 290x has 4gb vram. The point I was making was I'd rather take a 290x crossfire rig than a 780 6gb rig. 6gb on a 780 is about as cute as 4gb on a 760.

I seen bf4 use over 2gb, and many other games so that's 2gb cards out the window, and I seen a 760 use more than 3gb like I say but you can't see the fact that even with 1150 shaders the vram is a separate part of the card.
    but sure, time will tell.
I used to like 3gb cards but not so much now, but like I said the 780ti is nice so ..

I was on about 4gb 290x. It's more than enough. Anyway, here's Skyrim maxed out at 1440p with 8xAA, Highres mods, Fauna, Flora, Weather, you name it mod... Took it just now, just for you.

Yes, that's under 2200mb vram usage... It could go up, depending on the location, this was captured in a town. But still, to say that 4gb isn't enough, when I can run modded Skyrim at 1440p with 8xAA and only hit sub 2.5gb vram usage is just flame bait. Sorry.

I see so yeah to push the high vram usage with todays games you need a brute gpu in the first place, however games built with higher vram in mind won't be layer upon layer of what's his name, for ex. I could get high vram usage and high frames in titanfall and Daylight but in skyrim with mods my frames would be horrendous.
I totally see where you're comin from now.
[bioshock doesn't take much to run but uses loads of vram another ex.

interesting... Skyrim always ran like a champ on my rig. What games are you getting high vram usage btw? I'd like to test those.

i seen through my searching that amd and NVidia generally use differing amounts, sometimes the diference is quite a lot.
anyways doesn't titanfall use near 3gb and don't you have that? what about thief don't you have that?
I've mentioned a few games already the hell. :)
does bf4 mantle still use loads?

I would love to see your frame rates loading up 6gb of video ram on a cut down gk100.

or even 5gb eh --TK-- i'm in. :D
i'll lower everything and max the textures and show my screenshot pic off.
gta5 ftw. gonna use more than 3gb I bet. it would help sell 880s with 4gb.
