Default What monitor to get? - 07-31-2012, 00:21 | posts: 73 | Location: belgium

I'm getting a gtx 560 ti, but I'm scared of the monitor I should pick with it.

I have a bad history of ghosting screens. My current laptop has a very horrible ghosting panel, my current samsung TV ALSO has very awful ghosting/smearing.

My budget is around 300$ and I'd like a monitor with very little/none ghosting to use with my pc and ps3.

I considered a 120hz panel, since those seem to be better at ghosting, but thread(s) like this one: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=361169 seem to tell they don't perform very well under 120fps. And I'm pretty sure a gtx 560 ti will run around 50-70fps on most 1080p games (and that's not even max)

What should I do?

Hi. In my own opinion I wouldnt get a 120hz display if my card is a 560 Ti. The 560 Ti is good but like as you said I doubt it can make full use of the 120hz since at 1080p the card would not reach 120hz in most games.

But then again, having a 120hz monitor is always good. Should you decide to upgrade to a more capable card like a 680 or 690 then at least you already have a monitor that can support 120 fps.

Well, what's the size you're looking for?

Anyway, this: Asus PA238Q 23-Inch Professional Super-IPS Full-HD LED Monitor

might work for you. Read reviews on it in case you're hyper sensitive to ghosting and someone who is like you had reviewed it. It got rave review from MaximumPC. Top Mid-range Monitor for the price they said.
Just a suggestion =D

EDIT: Price right now on Amazon = $256.99

Yes there is a difference @ 120hz regardless of frame rate, its just greater at higher frame rates. Its worth it at what ever fps, if your a gamer.
(I think that should be stickied, for all the 120hz vs 60hz posts! lol)

60hz just needs to be phased out already, its pointless. I guess costs are keeping it around. Although 120hz monitors are not that expensive really...

This site actually has a good test. (worst result vs. best result)

Just wondering what the difference is. If I add a Dell U2311H, the best result actually has 0% ghosting. Worst result does have some ghosting though

Are they comparing different overdrive settings maybe?

I have a Dell U2312HM and I'm very happy with it. NO ghosting or other issues. After having an IPS Panel for a while I would not want to move back to a TN panel ever again.

PS: When you get a Dell, watch out to get a newer revision, the first revision had some issues like noise when turning brightness below 99 and a slight yellow tint.

60hz all the way, 120FPS is a nightmare to achieve on today's lackluster hardware.

60FPS at 60hz is your best bet, I mean SPECIALLY as your getting 1 560ti - 2 680's in SLi with a 4.6Ghz CPU still cannot hold even close 120FPS in many games for the most part.

Quite frankly if it was not for these 120hz monitors and all the extreme resolutions and multi monitor setups I know for a fact I would not be able to play the way I like to play, which is 1080p 60hz solid 60fps.

This requires 670SLi and a heavily o/c CPU for a games like BF3, The Witcher 2, and many others.

We would all love 120hz 120FPS - but we have to stick with what's realistic.

60 fps will still be smoother on the 120Hz monitor. Though obviously for the smoothest experience 120 fps is in order.

I have not found this at all, you need to match/beat your refresh rate.
