Cool Eyeglasses advice - 07-27-2012, 00:37 | posts: 11,666 | Location: ♫

went to an Optometrist, my RX for myopia..

right Sph Cyl Axis
Dist - -3.25 - -

Left Sph Cyl Axis
Dist- -3.00 - -

IDP = 64mm

has glass lenses made, everything looked fishbowly (flat monitor looked like the hunch of hunchback), a week later, decided to change the lenses, went to the optometrist, lenses right on the money.

decided to change them to plastic lenses, better straight ahead, but now the far edges (left and right) looked skewed and below the floor/ground was moving away, felt like i was going to trip at any time.

again had the lenses checked, they were correct.

went to a new Optometrist, new RX..

right Sph Cyl Axis
Dist - -4.00 (wtf?) -0.25 170

Left Sph Cyl Axis
Dist- -3.75 (re-wtf) -0.50 150

IDP = 65mm

plastic lenses, high index 1.6x something.

all good (up-down-left-right perception wise), also distant object are perfectly sharp, but now if i turn my eyes quickly or try to get close to objects "slowly" (eg. to read something on the monitor) my vision blurs and goes out of focus for a couple of seconds, also some eye strain and mild headaches, been a week or so now, i'm also getting a very weird symptom, it's like i can't speak properly like i can't control my tongue properly, take off the glasses for a few minutes and all is good.

i never had anything like this happend to me before with any glasses i ever had in over 20 years, also 2 different optometrists, different results, 2nd one shows mild astigmatism.

question - what i experience with the latest eyeglasses, indicates that they are too strong? (the blur?) or is it the astigmatism crap that was added to the latest RX?

now i'm back to my old 6 years old glasses, all good, until i sort this out.

i will go have my glasses and eyes checked.. again

just wanted a general opinion from you, especially if you had a similar experience, it would help.

as for the material of the lenses, normal CR-39 plastic seem best, i hate Polycarbonate plastic, terrible.

btw my frame (gordon freeman'ed)

Is this problem correctable with Lasik? I had glasses as a kid and hated them... even more as I got older. Lasik surgery is so incredibly inexpensive today compared to when I had it done, IMO it makes zero sense to go with glasses except in those cases where your vision cannot be corrected by Lasik.

I paid $1600/eye when I had it done about 12 years ago. Last I heard, you can get both done for roughly half of what I paid for a single eye.

... And if you worry about the risk factor, just know this. Lasik is extremely safe. Whenever you hear a story about someone getting an infection or other issue that has the possibility of causing blindness, statistics show that you're more likely to be killed by a bee sting. The people who do have complications are almost always because of their own negligence. During that first week of healing, keep your butt planted in your chair and post on XS or whatever you do. Infections are typically caused by being stupid and rubbing your eye, or riding in a car with the window down, or not religiously using the steroid and anti-biotic eye drops every 6 hours.

This sounds like a pain in the a$$ but it's really very simple. And FYI.... you'll definitely do better with the ladies after eye surgery as well. (plus you'll be able to see the horrid ones that you might typically take home... hehe.)

Whenever I get new lenses it always takes my eyes/brain a few weeks to get used to them. Until then I can experience trouble focussing after moving my head quickly, slight drunken head motion etc. It's all pretty normal as far as I'm aware and completely goes away after a few weeks.

i'll take your suggestion in mind but i'm not planning to have surgery just yet, i'm still within 3.xx so not a big deal, i do extremely well with the ladies anyway

any advice related to my eyeglasses/lenses issue that does not involves surgery is welcome.

if all else fails, i might try contact lenses which is probably like opening another can of worms.

interesting, cause that's kinda what i experience, i just find it odd that one RX says one thing, another says something else and every one of them gives different symptoms.

especially the problem with speech which was extremely weird, as if my eyes were screwing my ability to speak, that can't be part of the "getting used to new glasses".

maybe temporary aberration, distortion, skew, barrel view, warping is ok, but speech shouldn't really be part of the process, infact that's one of the things i'll discuss with the doctor, it's plain weird.

does a .25 or .50 difference in RX makes a big difference?

eg. -3.00 = -3.25 or -3.50.

previous glasses made my monitor look like this..

- with my previous glasses and without glasses

- with new glasses

this problem was fixed with the new RX.

previous rx and glasses, crystal clear but skewed objects.

new glasses, clear at a distance, no fishbowl view, but there's a blur, which i suspect it's either from the astigmatic lenses (and probably i'm not astigmatic) or lenses too strong.

if i keep the glasses about an inch away from me, i don't get any blur and everything is perfect.

i even took my own IPD/PD myself with a ruler, 65mm so the one in the new RX is correct, as such it has to be a problem with the value of the Spheric, Cyl and Axis, just a guess.

Have you thought about trying contacts? You could probably experiment with the prescription easily with that. Then again, if you have to get the weighted ones, I can see why you wouldn't want to try them.

that's impossible, i wore the glasses 24/7, i couldn't bear it anymore, some heads looked like Beavis and Butthead.

i'm willing to give contacts a try, but only if there's no solution, i do give glasses a chance, a week or 2 (unless they're really bad) i wear 24/7 through the headache and nausea and all.

once upon a time i used to get RX, get new eyeglasses and all was fine, not sure what's changed, lower quality lenses maybe? lazy optometrists?

if i place my glasses 1 inch away, everything's perfect including focus at any distance.

afaik placing any glasses away lowers the diopers, so perhaps the RX is a tad too strong, occasionally optometrists exaggerate numbers... i feel on purpose and not for your own benefit but theirs, if your vision goes to hell quicker, surgery time which means $$$$.

meh.

May I ask why you don't like contacts? I wore glasses for a year and then switched to contacts. Its like being able to see for the first time again. You get your peripheral vision "back". You don't have to deal with the prescription change in the glasses, as in, if you look near the edge of the glasses instead of the center, its off a bit. I wear acuvue oasys and I swear I cant feel the darn things. I shower with them and wear them for probably 18 hours a day.

took another eye exam today.

i don't hate contacts, i'm just used to glasses that's all and they're part of my look, the "off center" issue, i don't get that with my 6 years old glasses, all directions are 100% perfect.

i ordered Acuvue contacts anyway after reading your post, will give them a try, there will be a slight change of RX apparently since it works different, we'll see how it goes, willing to try.
