Default Unable to install nvidia control panel -and drivers- properly. - 07-22-2012, 16:09 | posts: 514 | Location: Argentina

Hello,

Yerterday I did a fresh install, installed the latest betas but I got massive stuttering in BF3, so I tried to get back to 304.48. I have 2 ASUS 670 DCII Top in SLI.

As always, i uninstalled the drivers from the control panel, restarted, ran driver sweeper and tried to install the 304.38 normally.

After a couple hours I managed to install the driver manually -from the device manager- and the control panel does show up, but I´m still unable to install another set to drivers properly.
Whenever i run the driver installer the control panel installation fails and the cards go to "display" (device) in the device manager instead of "standard vga", so I have to change it to "standard vga", restart the system and install the drivers from the device manager on both cards to get them running.

This is the error I get with any set of drivers.

Things I tried:

- Remove pshyx and NV3D folders
- Ran driver sweeper, ccleaner, driver cleaner in safe mode.
- Remove files from filerepository -it won´t let me delete the whole nv_disp.inf_amd64_neutral_???" folder, just some files.
- Tried extracting the driver package as well "nvcplsetupeng.exe". When I run setup from nvcplsetupeng.exe, it does nothing, it only creates a tmp file in C:\. For instance "INS_a916c52e.TMP", "INS_37bea7fb.TMP", etc.
- Ran files as admin, although the security is set to low.
- Ran a scan for trojans and viruses.
- Disable antivirus

So i´m out of options and I can´t seem to get this fixed
I read a lot of forums but nothing that comes close to this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Looks like something in Windows is borked, perhaps by one of the driver sweepers?

Run SFC (system file checker), it will scan the system files and repair damage.

You may need to re-install any service packs afterwards, I'm not sure as its been a long time since I used it.

Try installing the driver again if you wish, but I would complete the SFC process and scan your PC for any malware in case that is the cause for the files changing.

In the first article it demonstrates how to take control of those files that cannot be changed.
After taking control of them, run SFC again.

Could someone upload the folders "c:\windows\system32\driverstore\repository\
nv_lh.inf\" and ":\windows\system32\driverstore\repository\machine .inf".

I would really appreciate it.

Still... i wont let me copy any file into that folder I need to find out how.

Thanks in advanced

Don't delete files from here. There is a proper way to configure the driver store, using the pnputil command. Maybe it's too late now

I would upload the files you requested, but I have deleted anything but Windows XP from my machine.

The simple way to fix this is to do an 'in place upgrade' OS install. This will leave all your programs intact and merely require updates to be installed. You've managed somehow to either corrupt the driver store or the registry. If by using the control panel, you meant using device manager, you CANNOT use that method any more. It's unsupported. Stop using driver sweeper and messing around with system files and use the standard driver install and it will eliminate 99% of your problems.

Nor I for the most part, but I might get lazy.

You needn't concern yourself with the driver store, since GTX 670 is not supported natively by Win 7 RTM OS, so deleting files would be pointless.

I would probably avoid enabling Microsoft Update for drivers, and just install the latest one manually.

FYI, the little picture of the dialog box you posted earlier may be the result of you changing your temp path(s). There is a bug in the Nvidia installer regarding it.

I did actually change the system variables, though i have always done this and never had this issue. I will look for the default paths later.

Thanks for the head up
