Default crosshair 4 formula stuck at CPU initialization - 07-24-2012, 15:27 | posts: 14 | Location: NH

this Is a problem my desktop just developed this last week. I was running 4 gb of gskill flare at ddr3 2000 cas7 and I decided It was time for more ram, newegg was having a special so I ordered 16gb of kingston hyperx genesis. when I upgraded the ram I noticed that It was getting stuck at ram check on the quick leds and It kept cycling back to the cpu check and to ram check. at that point I put my old ram back In and the same problem occured. next I tried reseting the cmos and It still occured. next I tried 1 set of the genesis at a time In different channels and eventually got the system to start, but with only 8gb In It. everything seemed fine and I set the ram to Its rated speed and booted Into windows. 12 hours later the system was still running fine and I decided to play team fortress 2 with my friends for awhile , about 30 minutes later the system suddenly completely locked up, and I had to reset. the system was now stuck at cpu check according to the q-leds. I tried the samre routine before , changing the ram arpund and cmos reset but this time It didnt help. at this point I decided to try the rog connect feature out to see what Is ailing the computer. I open the software on my laptop and started my desktop again. the rog poster said the board was at "cpu Init" and stayyed that way for about 30 minutes. everytime I start It It does this.

so my question Is, what Is wrong with It? I'm thinking It Is the processor but I wanrt to get a 2 nd opinion before I rma anything. and sorry for any typos, I wrote this on my phone.

Press the MemOK! button on the motherboard, btw your CPU doesn't support 2000mhz ram, try 1600mhz....

You can't get away with 16GB of RAM at those kind of speeds. Probably not even 1600. The memory controller isn't very good. Test at 1333 and see if it will boot.

when it crashed it had 8 gb running at 1600, before it had 4gb running at ddr3 2000 (that stuff was designed for just 4 asus mobos and the 1090t). Anyway according to rog connect the ram is set to 1333, i have tried 8gb in both channels with both sets of ram and it get stuck on cpu init.

That BIOS is way out of date, click here for the latest version.....it has improved memory compatibility.

Just download the file to a USB stick then use EZ Flash in your BIOS.

Post back results....

I remember watching a video on BIOS recovery using the ROG connect port with a flashdrive with the new BIOS on it and holding the ROG connect button (Not sure if your has that button)

I'm pretty sure 1866MHz is the fastest the Phenom II IMC can handle, I have the 965 with 2133MHz G-Skill and the Crosshair V Formula and I can't push that RAM any higher than 1866MHz

EDIT - Found it (Might not be supported on the Crosshair series)

do I need to put the flashdrive In a specific port to use crash free and do I need to rename the file like you do when using bios flashback.

I have the same motherboard and cpu, and went through the same issues with the system stalling on post at the cpu init stage with certain memory modules. Finally gave up with trying to run 16gb cas 7 1600mhz and went back to my Crucial 4 x 2gb = 8gb 1600 mhz modules where its now stable. Was told by Raja at Asus that the mem controller on the 1090T is crap and their qvl list is very limited and it doesn't handle 4gb modules very well. I would recommend to upgrading to bulldozer or trying other ram modules at lower stock settings because trying to even to up vtt or nb voltages will not help nor running half the ram modules. Anyhow that Bios version someone posted is a beta version and I think the 2002 version came out after the 3027 version despite the dating.

Good luck..

The reason im concerned is that my computer had the same issues when i went back to my 2gb modules. I will try again and post results.

Dude,

Dont get fancy updating your bios. Do it the old fashioned way from a dos bootable usb flash drive. Also I would first get some compatible ram in there. Dont risk a bad flash on an unstable system!

Edit: If your having the same issues with the old 2gb modules after it could be you need to clear cmos settings because i've noticed the mb will not update ram latency settings when changing modules. If you had same issue before go to Bestbuy and buy ddr3 1333 cas 8 2gb modules and test for stability and then flash your bios.

OK, so it wont POST so i cant use a bootable anything to update.

And i tried 1 of my 2gb sticks in all 4 slots after clearing the cmos, it didnt result in a post. the ram i have should be fine at defaults, its speced for ddr3 2000 at 7-9-7-24-1t. running cas9 at 1333 shouldnt be a problem for it.

I disagree. I had the same problem with 1866mhz ram (2 x 4gb) and running it a 1333 didnt help. Half the time it wouldnt post. I also had Corsair Vengence 4x4gb or 2 x4gb 1600 mhz c7 ram wouldnt post. Only my Crucial 4x2gb c8 1600mhz modules work. Go to best buy and buy the most boring low speed low latency ram and when you post and are stable flash your bios, then return the memory or keep it.

Sorry to hear that but have you tried reseating the CPU? Maybe it's on the socket too tight? Maybe it's a bad CPU. I would try reseating it. Hopefully you can return that ram. What kind of memory was it?

Tried reseating it, same thing happened. The memory was hyperx genesis ddr3 1600 cas 9.

Wonder whats the module size? 4gb? 2gb? On my board it has issues with 4gb modules. If not then you may have a bad cpu...

Edit: When testing make sure its on a tabletop with antistatic material with just the bare essentials plugged into the board to make sure there are no shorts with the case..

Well I said try ram less than 4gb in module size and less than 1600mhz. Don't try 2gb 2000mhz at 1333 or 4gb module @ 1333. Most likely it's the memory controller on the CPU is bad.

Their is a chance you may have borked the memory controller by running your ram at 2000mhz...I don't know if the IMC can be damaged this way however it seems feasible from what you've said.

As mentioned earlier the Phenom II is not designed to work with ram faster than 1600mhz, regardless of what the motherboard can handle.

I can clock my ram up to 1866mhz without issue but if I go any higher the IMC goes haywire; for instance it only detects half the amount of memory installed and will not run dual channel.
