why does linux desktop not fit my screen?

i have the same issue on other distro's. Using Ubuntu 12.04 atm.
Basically, the desktop is goes outside the edges of my 1080p Sony 3d TV. I can only see part of the launcher and taskbar, its like their a number of pixels too far off screen.

i'm using the most current nvidia driver i'm aware of, but i don't think what version i use matters. i looked at nvidia x server settings but see nothing wrong or nothing i can change to make it right.

Any ideas to fix?

If there's an auto-adjusting feature on your TV I'd suggest to try that.
Sometimes it's not the driver but the monitor/TV itself.

That happens to me on a lot of TV's plugging my laptop in via HDMI. They need to be put on PC/Game mode.

on my TV if i plug my lappy in i have to set the tv to "inline Scanning" for it to fit properly (in my aspect ratio menu)

Or look for the 1:1 setting usually under screen ratios. On my LG TV it's called 1:1 Pixel on my Samsung it's called Just Scan. Both are in the ratios

Solved.
Under Nvidia X server settings is an option called "Overscan". i used the slider and it adjusted the screen to fit.
