Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on Nexus S -
07-15-2012, 04:51
| posts: 18,785 | Location: Toronto, Canada
Jelly Bean has been out for the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7 tablet for a while now and those who do not run these new devices are still left hanging on Android 2.3 or 4.0. However, some crafty Android developers have been able to port the SDK version and the Galaxy Nexus version to the Nexus S.
For the most part it works quite well, performance increase is noticeable but there are some bugs like improper sleeping (depending on what's running, wakelock doesn't always work properly) and GPS is still iffy. Other than that the JRN84D build that I'm running works great.
Screenshot:

If you're willing to chance it on Jelly Bean check the thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1764646
Do note that custom kernels don't really work yet, you'll lose camera support. Just stick to stock Android 4.0.4 kernel for now that comes with the ROM port.

There's some partly working one for Galaxy S too. I won't be using it though. Today my phone suddenly rebooted and went into boot loop, couldn't get into recovery but download mode worked. I'l be using official roms for now since ICS isn't stable.

Surprisingly these Jelly Bean ports are very solid, haven't noticed any reboots yet, and I really hope I don't.

"stick with 4.0.4" Asus is still at 4.0.3.
Not the it has any issues... But i wouldn't be in a forum like this if i didn't want the latest version

Earlier today there was a community developer who ported Android 4.1.1 to the Nexus S. I played with it for a couple hours, it's a lot smoother due to further optimizations by the Google team and for the fact that this port is based on the AOSP source code and not based on the SDK or ported from another device.

However, I reluctantly had to roll back to Android 4.1 because calendar syncing was broken (works on some people's devices, not others including mine). Calendar is very important for me, so it was a no go and I just rolled it back.

I think the CM team has an early ROM version of Jelly Bean. Not sure for your device though.
I can wait for my Galaxy Nexus to come.
Also the program for 3G in the top left corner is for switching antennas ? Whats the name of it ?
Also any news on the Linaro code when it will be executed into the system or we have to do it ourselves.

Not a fan of pure CM, I like those ROMs which mixes CM and AOKP, so I'll wait for those.
As for the 3G app, it's called 3G Watchdog, it tells you how much mobile data you've used.

3G Watchdog was useful, but that's built into ICS and JB so no point still using it?

This is from the notifications bar i suspect. Yeah if so it is more useful because it takes one swipe down while to go to the ICS native you need to enter settings and then Data usage.

Nice.
Im curious to see if ill get a better DL/UPL speed when my Nexus arrives than the one i have now with my HD2 running ICS. The Gnex has a better radio data transfer but lets see for day to day use.
Which reminds me. How is fast is the data you have up there in Canada ? Any better than my T-mobile one. Averaging 3.5Mpbs DL and 1.5Mpbs UPL

My data tops 3 mbps only if lucky, if there's a lot of congestion or in a low signal zone (like my house), I rather not bother my 3G data lol. It's so bad it's worse than 512 kbps sometimes. This is because I'm with one of the new entrants, they're still slowly building out their networks.

That is indeed bad compared to here. Ive noticed something about ICS is that the Internet speed when downloading or loading is a bit more efficient and noticeably faster than the older Android OS's .

If you've rooted your phone you can edit build.prop to make it even faster (depending on network conditions ofc)

You can't just run them, it's toolchain optimization.
I went back to 4.0.4 since I can't stand Samsung firmware anymore. Ics works much better anyway.

Android 4.1.1 OTA is now slowly rolling out. I got impatient and manually flashed the OTA lol.

EDIT: Some people have reported issues flashing the OTA manually, I have made a stock nandroid backup of Android 4.1.1. It hasn't been touched other than the first boot (it'll still ask you to set up accounts and stuff). The backup can be found here (use ClockworkMod to restore the backup): http://www.mediafire.com/?pccu3xqa8baa6p0
Enjoy =)!
