Default Driver for old, but well working 9600 Pro card - 07-15-2012, 17:05 | posts: 14 | Location: Wisc, USA

I am using the drivers that came with the card.
They work fine.
I know ATI has put the 9600 pro on the unsupported list.
Is there a newer driver that will work on this older card?
I have: Asrock dual 64x2 sata 2 board.
It has the Uli AGP fix and works with AGP cards.
I know I should upgrade to a Sata video card, but can't afford it.
I am surprised how well the 9600 pro works after such a long time.
I have only 512 memory, but it is fast 3200 memory.
The video card has 128meg video memory on it.

Catalyst drivers are available up to and including 9.3 or you can choose to use the remaining 10.2 legacy driver for that particular card.

Thanks, I had found the 9.3 after writing this post. It is working fine.
I will try the 10.2 also, although it probably will not install. One never knows.
I am using Vista home premium.
Not by choice.

Those cards were moved onto the legacy driver starting with 9.3, and that legacy driver stopped being updated with 10.2. 10.2 is the newest legacy driver for that card and the one you should be using.

Note that the 10.2 legacy driver is not the same as the "normal" 10.2 driver. These drivers are "Vista 64" drivers but will work fine on Windows 7 64-bit or even Windows 8.

Also note that you are still able to install the latest CAPs on top of the 10.2 legacy driver. 10.2 was when CAPs were introduced, and you have to use the 10.2 driver in order to use CAPs (9.3, etc are too old for CAPs).

If you only have 512mb ram you would be best using stock windows drivers since they will probably use the least ram. If you want newer don't install CCC since it uses like 70-100mb ram. I have an old rig with 512mb ram and a 9800 pro and i ended up using these:

System manages to stay <130mb ram used in task manager with them. Newest isn't always the best.

Be wary using the combination of latest caps with dog old drivers and an even older card, there may be some issues mixing and matching latest caps and drivers back too far. Unigine is broken doing that kind of thing, god knows what else.

Plus...

1. It's a single card anyway

and...

2. It's an not an entirely up to par card to warrant using the latest caps for a single card anyway because playing modern stuff is rather a moot point.

I would just stick to the driver whether 10.2 legacy or 9.3 and below and forget all about using the cap for a single card. But that's just me.

Also 9.3 isn't too old for caps, they were just prior included within the driver code itself before the crossfire rewrite of 10.2 segregated them into the cap file we have today.

9.3 had artifacts in games.
I am back to the 8.34 Powercolor drivers.
I mostly play older games and adventure games.
So, this setup is good enough for now.

Cannot properly run flash player on windows stock driver, do not try it. I have before and the browser kept freezing up.

But he can start run command, type services.msc, set framework to manual, start run again, type "regedit", HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run and delete CCC (or something). Also, instead of regedit, he can type "msconfig" and under services disable CCC (untick).

There is no lost in functionality, CCC is working, but it needs more time to load maybe. I use that with 4GB of RAM, i don't see the reason why not do that, because it is very bloated software taking resources unnecessary.

9.3 was very stable drivers under XP, idk for Vista tho.
