Try downloading a bootable disc of a Linux distro. Boot with the burned disc into the Linux WITHOUT installing it and then see if you can access your files through the Linux system.
The other option i can think of is to disassemble the hard drive enclosure and connect your HD directly via SATA cable to the motherboard to see if the problem still persists

Yeah sorry i did not consider that. Try the linux distro if not test on another computer. Use Ubuntu if you want.....just be careful with the linux distro not to erase anything by mistake.

Hmm at this point i think you should try contacting WD and see if they have a program for recovering and replacing your hard drive. That is if you have the warranty and you have the invoice.

When i have this kind of situation,i use Testdisk
A small guide here
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step
If the drive doesn't show any file while in Testdisk,i image the drive using dd,or ddrescue, then iextract the data from the image.

Had the same problem on my 500gb passport.

I thought i was clever so disassembled it...... Bad move its not got any sata connectors, but the usb connector is actually hardwired onto the drive.

Binned the thing in the end its worthless now theres no way to connect it to anything.
