I only played DOTA 1 a few times (much older versions) but since I got in DOTA2 beta I've logged over 400 hours playing with some chaps I've made friends with.
I keep trying to get my friend to join me, but I don't think he will get in until after the game is launched. Btw, the game is F2P with all areas/heroes not locked and nothing you buy changes the mechanics of the game. What costs are additional costumes for heroes, which is purely aesthetic.

Yeah, It's great that its free to play (just like Team Fortress 2)..not to mention that you get rewards and items as you keep playing, which is purely cosmetic and unique.
Played a few games yesterday, I gotta say that its a must try before you say "I am not interested or don't like it".
The UI is much more simpler and the graphics actually look very very nice, some of the character models are excellently done (thou not a bit dark in theme like the actual Dota game).
Those who liked Diablo 3 (especially those waiting for the pvp) , I am pretty sure they will like Dota 2 just as much and may be even more.
----
Edit
Heros in the game -> http://www.dota2.com/heroes/
With all the skills and statistics, with a videos of how the skill works.
The videos might look a bit loonely, but be assured its not so when you actually playing the game..its super fun

But when Dota 2 is released, the game will pop up to be ready to play on all steam users accounts..hence I am expecting it to be a bit more respectful at that time. (Also I am pretty sure Valve personal will look after this issue too, can't have too many un-friendly people playing it)

Just uninstalled the game, will never play the game ever again..the community sucks.
Since its on steam thought it would be better, but nope..same as always.
I'd rather play other games now. (feel bad thou, got invite and stopped playing it) Irony..

Just a quick PSA to people who don't know this: you can buy yourself a dota 2 invite in the dota 2 store and activate it from your steam inventory.

Nah, I wouldn't pay £25 to get myself into the game early when I could just wait for the beta key to arrive in my inbox or get a spare key off a friend.
That's Valve for you, always trying to make a quick buck.

The community is getting better, they have been taking action with complaints against people, and the more people who join the community that arent "dotaers, or doaters who hate other lol/hon/etc people". The people who started playing beta were die hard (*******s) but as it keeps getting larger more mainstream people will play and the die hard (*******s) will stick to tournaments instead of bitching in public matches at people.

You should try league of legends, definitely better then HoN and Dota2.

Yepp he's right, try League of Legends if not already.
Currently Dota 2 has mostly hardcore Dota 1 players who signed up for Beta (most of them), so its a bit less friendly right now.
The in-game tutorials has not been implemented yet, so you'd need to learn by watching others play (either live or replays to get hand of actually how skills are being utilized creatively)
As for me, I like Dota 2 (even in the Beta stages) as its a clear cut above League of Legends in terms of everything except player friendly crowd (since the game isn't live_final yet)
Coupled with steam/valve service, the experience is great*

How does Dota 2 run? I've found HoN runs pretty badly, it seems to drop frames all over the place and my fps plummets in battles which should never be the case with my PC. The main reason I went for HoN instead of LoL was it's more like Dota and I'm guessing Dota 2 will be the most popular/most polished MOBA when it's out.

(I don't think HON splits CPU utilization across many cores, doesn't support above 2 CPU cores mostly)
I got AMD 6950, Dota 2 - all settings MAX @ 2560x1440 downsampled to 1920x1080 with Vsync 'On', Game is 99.9% smooth.
(even referenced GPU '3' in the video file in cfg, to have 100% viewport instead of non-100%)
-----
Edit
Dota 2 is on Source Engine* by the way, with cloth physics for this game. its superbly optimized overall for performance with max quality. <- looks better than any Iso metric camera based game I have ever seen till date...
Also there is a nice little percentage bar (the viewport render % I mentioned), which actually controls at % do you want to render game in. If you are running slow at native 1920x1080 by any chance, you can move the slider to 80% and it will render only the 3D world of the game at 80% scale and maximize it to 1920x1080 while keeping all the MENU UI's still at 1920x1080. <- superb option. And the slider does even smaller values..like you can have 81%, 98% etc..

It runs very smooth on my setup at 60fps capped. Never dips and i'm also running maxed out on all settings...
Only thing i do not like is when people decline a match or they leave at the start of the match. It really annoys me.

That's good to hear, Valve games usually run well though. I absolutely hate games that can't hold 60fps, especially when they don't even look that great (like HoN).
BTW, how is beta handled for Dota 2? Do you get "friend keys", or is it totally random? I'm just wondering the likelihood of actually being given a key.

No, it's not. It's certainly easier than the other two, but as a result it has less overall depth.
