Default GT 650M gaming laptop opinions? - 07-03-2012, 21:05 | posts: 6

So, I'm looking to get a cheap gaming laptop nothing highly pricey...and I've found the GT 650M is a pretty reasonable price for quality..i think anyway

To the point, I'd just like some of you guys who are experts or just generally clued up on the technical side of things to have a think on these specs.

PROCESSOR - its between the i5 and i7 series..and it all depends on what you guys may think i would make most use out of in terms of value for money. The cheapest option is the i5-3210M clocking at a minimum of 2.50Ghz. The most expensive option i would go for is the i7-3610M at 2.3Ghz. Now I will use my laptop mostly for gaming without other programmes running, but I do like using Photoshop, iTunes and browsing the web at the same time...things like that.

RAM - 4GB or 8GB...its just those 2 options...a lot of opinions say that 4GB is enough, but the system will operate on 64 bit so will i benefit from 8GB's for a small price for an extra 4GBs?

GRAPHICS - Nvidia Geforce GT 650M ..simply because its pretty cheap considering in general laptops amount to a high price anyway. Games I will play will range from the latest football managers to GTA V when it comes out..to be extreme. But in general games such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R and similar FPS i want to play.

The rest im not too bothered about. The hard drive is a 500GB one which will be enough for me as I have always been convenient with the rubbish 150GB i now have.

So guys, please point me in the best direction possible as its looking to cost me around £800 for this kind of rig! ..or if you have any better solutions I'd be happy to take the time to research them!

Thankyou!

For ram go for 8GB and turn off page file.
And for 650m look up what memory bus width it have and what memory it uses ddr3/ddr5.

Its DDR5 for memory. As for the bus width i couldnt find anything on that but what i can tell you is in detail its called the GeForce GT 650M 1GB DDR5 DirecX 11 card..on the nvidia website this comes up but im not sure if its for the 1GB version:

PU Engine Specs:
384 cores
CUDA Cores
Up to 900 MHz
Graphics Clock (MHz)
Up to 27.2
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec)
Memory Specs:
DDR3\GDDR5
Memory Interface
128bit
Memory Interface Width
Up to 80.0
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec)

sorry that im a bit of a novice in this field lol

There is just 128bit bus version available. GDDR5 is the faster one.

Perhaps a little - but price matters, too...GDDR5 compensates the narrow bus quite a lot. Only the most expensive cards have 256bit bus. I'd search for GDDR5 version.

Ah i see, as long as it does the job. What about be your opinion on the best processor for my needs? will an i5 be quick enough for everything i want or will the i7 justify itself?

I would get an i7 over an i5 in a laptop any day, the i5's are dual core only, the i7 3610 is quad core.

As for STALKER, i'm not too sure how it will run, not maxed out anyway.

Probably 10 - 20% more speed.
...well, that's for laptop version; desktop will be about twice faster.

Yep, the laptop versions are crippled/lower clocked/less shaders/older dies - but AMD is narrowing that gap in their last offerings. And NVidia is doing it, too - GTX 680M is in practice lower clocked GTX 670.
