is GTX 680 faster than 2 x GTX 285 in SLI ?

My system is:
Intel Core i7 940 q 3.6 GHz
6 GB Ram
Vista 64
2 x GTX 285 in SLI

I'm thinking on upgrading. What do you recommend?

Is my processor able to handle a 680 or even a 690 or is he a braking issue?

Your PC will easily handle the 680/690. Those two 285s are equivalent to my 460s and yeah iirc the 680 will be faster.

Can't find GTX 285 SLI on anand bench, but GTX 285 SLI scaling is probably about 70-80%. It should be a bit slower than a GTX 570. GTX 670 is this much faster than GTX 570. Yes, 670 not 680, it's pointless to even consider GTX 680 since it's only marginally faster but $100 more expensive.

680 not being much faster is true at stock, but not OC'd to for example 1300/7000.

On the CPU limiting, Hillbert still uses a 930 i7 in his benches iirc so you have nothing to worry about.

I just went from 285 SLI to a single GTX 670. Faster and quieter. Much greener as well. One 285 can use 204 watts compared to the 670 at about 170 watts though typically about 140 watts. If you overclock this board and max out the power target slider at +122% the highest TDP will be just 173 Watts. Much less power and heat than 408 watts!

Plus now you'll get to enjoy DirectX 11 games.

If you have the cash and want the best performance and bang per buck go for 2x670's or go for the 690 if you want to go that extra mile.

Edit......Whatever option you go for,before you do i would increase your cpu speed to atleast 4ghz so you get no bottlenecks with your gpu because of your lower cpu speed at 3.6ghz and make sure its stable using either Linx,IBT,OCCT or Prime95 or you can use all of them.
