If there's a lack of open source support, it's not because how they (the engineers) wanted it to be.

Quote:
NVIDIA's binary Linux graphics driver is top-notch, their team also supports the shared FreeBSD and Solaris drivers, the Tegra Linux support is great, VDPAU is an open API, and NVIDIA Linux engineers occasionally submit upstream X.Org patches against the xorg-server, RandR, etc.

NVIDIA's Linux engineers have even bought graphics cards themselves to send over for Linux reviews at Phoronix. NVIDIA PR has had no interest in seeing Linux reviews on their products, etc. They've just played games with me for years and never delivered.

The best way to get them to open up is to do exactly what Linus did, get people talking about it. If he were to have just said "oh yeah nvidia is support blah blah technical babble" no one would have gave a ****. The multiple posts here about linus saying what he said wouldn't have happened. And even the multiple ones on reddit that received a ton of views wouldn't have happened.

But now that people are talking about, maybe Nvidia higher ups or whatever will take notice and make some changes.

Let's hope it changes Open Source for everybody not just Nvidia. Maybe this will do just that as you said for Nvidia, but hopefully it will open the eyes of many companies to support them.

I mean there is absolutely no harm in doing so. People are still going to use Windows or Apple crap regardless, as it's more user friendly for the majority.

Heh, if it were RMS who did the 'F thing' most people'd probably still just mark him as a luddite crackpot.
It just happens that it was Linus doing it, so everyone is talking about it.
If anyone else was doing it, not many would bother bring it up aside from "someone said the F word to nVidia"; not exactly a headliner.

Imagine if it was Justin Bieber who did the F thing along with the same preceding explanations like Linus said when asked about the same thing.

Sorry for that.
Brain bleach, anyone?

Good luck... nVidia is operating within the laws. They own sole rights to the products they design. As much as I agree with Linus....what nVidia is doing is 100% legal.
