Default TV tuner and vcr inquiry - 06-24-2012, 13:43 | posts: 50 | Location: South Africa

Hi,

I am interested in buying a tv tuner card the main reason being to backup family videos, but I am just not sure about the inputs and outputs. The tv tuner card being digital tuner and the vcr analog.

Details:
TV tuner card:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/PCI-E-DVB-T2...0452512&sr=8-1

VCR: Panasonic NV-MV41 (I&O on the right)
HTML Code:
http://www.google.co.za/imgres?q=Panasonic+NV-MV41&start=102&hl=en&client=firefox-a&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&sout=0&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=TUWcR6-zw-C8UM:&imgrefurl=http://abcbazar.ru/p/1950860/dvd-recorder-panasonic-dmr-eh68ee---rossiya.html&docid=XaTNieaP9w6ArM&itg=1&imgurl=http://images02.olx.ru/ui/20/94/59/1336645695_373048559_2--Panasonic-nv-mv41-.jpg&w=625&h=469&ei=PgrnT4KXNdKFhQf1kpTKCQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1097&vpy=138&dur=2980&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=147&ty=123&sig=114416340247622104192&page=3&tbnh=145&tbnw=192&ndsp=53&ved=1t:429,r:40,s:102,i:215&biw=1920&bih=986
Both the card and vcr has RF in & out but will the analog work with digital?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!!

So disappointed, 114 views and no responses, it seems the Guru3d community is stumped.

That tuner is really hard to get specific info on. Did some searching and it's all just sales - nothing solid.

Afaik, if the vcr will physically connect to the tuner, the tuner will accept the signal... but that's more of an educated guess than anything. I've always been able to record the vcr by either changing the tuners' channel to the corresponding vcr channel, or changing the tuners' input to "line".

I've used several types of tv tuners in the past to transfer vhs to my pc, and never had an issue doing so. In fact, the best results I've had doing this were with a bottom of the line pci tv tuner from KWorld (Asian-speak for "Crap") that cost me $0 after a $15 rebate.

Any of those tuners you used digital?

Kworld I know of but don't have any experience with. I chose the aforementioned tuner because after backing up all the necessities I would like to use it for its advertised use, heres hoping I can pickup more channels than the state-controlled ones.

I have absolutely no tv tuner experience but what is the channel changing to match the vcr and tuners' line input you spoke of, which program would you recommend for that?

You wanna' know how I know I'm getting old? I was thinking over all the tuners I've used in my lifetime... and forgot what I was thinking about.

I don't believe any of them were digital tuners, come to think of it. Having said that, I have used vcrs on televisions that had digital tuners - many times. Part of the problem is that I don't understand the formats used in Europe.

I really couldn't tell you that this will work with the analog input from the vcr. I know the "over the air" digital signals can't be used on older televisions without needing an analog to digital converter, so.... prolly' not.

As far as what software to use to control channel/line input -- every tuner I've ever bought came with software to control that. It's very similar to using your tv remote - the remote being your mouse or keyboard (or the actual remote that comes with the thing if it does). You simply click the channel up/down button within the control software or the corresponding key on the keyboard.

My only "real" recomendation would be to buy a tuner with a hybrid tuner.
NOT this one (avoid KWorld like the plauge)... but an example:

OR
screw the tuner - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815306013

I have a Hauppauge HVR-1600 that I use to record TV shows. I no longer use a VCR and my HTPC has replaced all of its functions and does more.

http://www.hauppauge.com/site/produc...a_hvr1600.html

It comes with a digital and analog tuner.

Old age= Stuff of nightmares

@ must_kill_ati
Currently have the vcr hooked up to an LG 32LD550 (100Hz model)with a digital tuner via composite, wish I had the tuner card knowledge to do the same.
Starting to think to rather go with a cheap tuner card with analog only and in the future just plug the satellite decoder in and be happy. Your answer concerning the software to control the channels makes me feel so green
I have looked at dual tuners in the past (not recently)but none of them had DVB-T2.
The shop I work for actually sells these http://www.amazon.com/ION-Audio-Vide.../dp/B0017PJ5FI but I have my doubts about it.

@ deltatux
Should have probably given more info, my mobo only has one PCI slot and that is used by the Xfi. Criteria: PCI express, DVB-T2, an be able to successfully pair with a vcr

@ airbud7
I have a few of the composite cables but how can that be used on its own or did you mean with other equipment? Please elaborate I don't think I fully grasp your train of thought!

@ jcSihle
Howdy Durbs, thanks for chiming in, although a bit short!

My idea will only work if the card has composite input...
Here is another idea...>http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815153015

2hours of video=6GB of data though

The card on the far left is the one I am interested in, top=in middel=out, bottom= 3.5mm audio connector. The top one looks like the aerial connector from back in the day.
HTML Code:

What about a converter from vcr composite out to RF in on the card?

By going that route, I have one vhs cassette of 9hrs sure it can be reencoded but that is tedious to do. That is only one of about 13 or 14 cassettes.

Thanks so much for trying thus far, when all else fails I'll just go analog.
