Default psu not upto scratch?? - 06-20-2012, 16:35 | posts: 211 | Location: England

hi, got a spare pc that the kids use
its a gigabyte 650 sli with 4gb ram and an e6600 with 2 hdd and a dvdrom
added a gtx 275 which was removed from my main pc as its card died and its all running win7 64bit
yesterday its all fine but today when i booted it went through the normal stuff and where it would usually say loading profiles i just had a black screen and the mouse pointer, it hung there for gaes and even a reboot was no better although i had to press load normally as my shutdown was just the off button so im assuming windows did fully load
this happened again so at the black screen i pressed ctrl, alt & del and it just loaded normally
could it be the psu isnt delivering quite enough juice as im sure this card uses more than the original 8800 gt
the psu is just a cheapie CIT 550W Dual 12V Rail PSU
DC Output Max
+3.3V +5V +12V1 +12V2 -12V +5VSB
28A 30A 16A 16A 0.3A 2.5A

it has 1 6pin pcie and i used the molex to pcie for the 2nd 6 pin it needed

any thoughts on what it might be, prior to this card being installed it was running fine
thanks

The 275 draws more than double the power of an 8800GT.

Is your adapter the 2 molex into 1 PCI-e type? Is it connected to 2 different rails?

no mate, the psu only has 1 rail for the molex cables, this my problem? and would that explain the black screen with mouse pointer at startup?
i realize the psu isnt the best but could it cause the issue i describe?

this is the psu but the description is incorrect, it only has 2 molex connectors

Is your mouse pointer frozen as well? I don't think a bad PSU is the problem because your gfx cards are not drawing a lot of power when it is just starting up. If your computer was acting up while playing games or running benchmarks, then that would be an indication that your PSU cannot handle the power.

If your mouse moves, then it is not likely a PSU problem. PSU problems present itself in the form of blue screens, reboots, or hard freezes (no mouse movement).

Sounds like some sort of software issue to me. Or possibly an old HDD that's causing your system to hang. But I think some weird software issue is the likely culprit. A reformat would probably fix the issue.

I would get rid of that China bomb as soon as possible. 550W PSU should be more than enough but in this case I would rather trust good 250W PSU than this.
