Default Xeon E5-2620 Vs i7 3770k - 06-14-2012, 15:06 | posts: 805 | Location: Miami

hi,

i was browsing around in newegg.com and found this Xeon E5-2620
i wonder if this processor is "better" than i7 3770k ? 6 cores and more cache?
i tried googling it but couldnt find any proper benchmark against each other.
what you guys think?

That Xeon's only on the X79 platform, totally different socket (LGA 2011), which needs more expensive mobo and RAM (quad channel), though you do get more PCIe lanes, which supposedly scales better with SLI beyond 2 cards. The 3770K is probably about on par with it in terms of compute performance due to the higher standard clock speed. IMO less cores clocked higher are better than more cores clocked lower, at least for most games and normal applications. The 3770K is also overclockable (though probably not as much as SB), whereas that Xeon might only be doable via the BClock on X79.

It's a server CPU based on SB-EP, very similar to SB-E. Its clock-to-clock performance is or should be like SB-E CPUs. So you can compare it to i7 3960X working at 2-2.5GHz.

For general use, games and most applications i7 3770K will be faster due to much higher clock and ability to increase even further.

Most of 'em will run non ECC memory. They are basically just better versions of the standard chips, hell mines basically a 980X for half the price with ECC support and slightly less multi options, but still turbo unlocked.

when you say "slightly less multi options" how bad does that effects daily usage ?
i.e Gaming? or do they start slowing down after 8th consecutive movie played (just trying to make up a scenario) ?

With the 980X you can change the turbo multiplier on the number of cores active, so have one core at 4.5 full load, 2 at 4.4, 3 at 4.3 etc. whereas with mine the max multiplier applies to all cores, so it runs constantly at 4.4 GHz under load, clocks down to 1.6 GHz under idle. With the newer SB stuff I doubt you can do this, remember mines an older X58 chip. I prefer X58 for more flexible OCing (poperly adjustable Bclock, PCie, etc) and performance wise it still kicks ass.

Aye, but still on par with a 2600K in compute performance and half the price of the extreme ed chip.

This is quite true, but I already had a crazy expensive X58 motherboard that I wasn't (and still am not) willing to part with.
