I'm hearing two very loud high pitched beeps every hour or so through my stereo. I'm 99.9% sure its the PC.

I have my huge 10 year old Sony hi-fi at just under two thirds volume so that I can use Windows/whichever media player I'm using to control the volume, and these beeps are very quick and VERY loud.

Put it this way: the beeps are loud enough and high pitched enough that I had my smoke alarm replaced... twice.

It was only when I turned off one of my speakers in Windows I could isolate the sound to the other side of the room and to my bloody stereo. Any ideas what this could be?

Probably a safety mechanism in the stereo or some other electronics device...

RagDoll.

Thanks for your input bud.

I thought about a safety mechanism in the stereo. I thought about testing with CD's. But I'm pretty sure the beeping is coming from the PC as when I adjusted the balance using windows, only one speaker beeped.

Could it be a faulty codec? I use my PC/Hi-fi 99% of the time to watch TV, films, listen to music etc. Haven't played a game in ages. Also I installed the latest official Asus audio driver I could find for my board half an hour ago, so we will see how that helps.

No I don't think so. I'm not 100% because the inconsistency of the beeps, but I think the audio driver may have fixed it.

I'll get back later...

Could it be mobile phone interference?

I dont think so... the noise doesn't seem to alter volume very much, like you would expect if you say got close to the speaker with a ringing mobile. Also its high pitched, and just two short beeps, unlike the normal 'bip bip bipbipbip biiiiip' that you normally expect from interference from a mobile.

I'm still drawing a blank on this one. Bit concerned tbh. Think its gonna take a while to diagnose at this rate.

Will probably bring my old PC downstairs and swap over for a few days and see if it continues.

Could it be the software you are using as a media player? Maybe if it's a demo it will introduce beeps every now and then to get you to pay for the full (beep free) version. Same goes for software that was used to rip any music you are listening to.
Does it beep if you are not using a media player?

Thanks for your response.

I currently use AIMP3 and Media Player Classic, so the beeps aren't to indicate a demo, as they are both free. I hear beeps using Youtube and so on, even when no video or audio is playing. It's so inconsistent it's annoying...

However AIMP3 runs very quietly in the background when you pause your music and minimise it; so quietly I forget it's running. It's a pretty new program on my PC, and Ive been using it pretty much constantly, so I'm gonna uninstall it for a bit. Possibly there's a conflict somewhere.

I know for sure its coming from the stereo as if I turn the volume down, the beeps aren't as ear-splitting. I'm 110% sure its corrupt hardware or software in the PC.

Next thing Ill try will be to format and reinstall windows; Use a hammer Chainsaws are good too
