Default Building a New 3d PC Rig.........Would like some opinions - 06-11-2012, 22:53 | posts: 1

Hi There Friends!!! YES I am new Here and its a pleasure to make your acquaintances ...and here we go..

Im in the process of waiting for parts to build a new PC 3D Rig and would love to hear your thoughts.

Originally this rig started off with most of the same hardwar but with different CPU,MOBO and RAM . I had an AMD 8150 with an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX and 16Gb of RAM and the latest driver updates on everything. I also installed some the of the best Hi Res texture mods I could find. Needless to say I have not been able to achieve the level of performance that I desired especially since my intention is to run SKYRIM and BF3 in 3D at a solid 60 + FPS or more. I have only been able to run Skyrim on 3D @ 1080p 24fps through Nvidia 3DTV but with FRAPS Running in the background and achieving a MAX FPS of 30-50 on the FRAPS Counter.
Well as you all may have imagined I would not stand for this outrage and called upon the local geek council and after a lot of pizza and different forms of alcohol we came to the conclusion that the AMD 8150 and its ilk had to go. And that a new more powerful RIG should appear in its place. Which the specs are before you now.
And if you can share some wisdom on whether or not I should go with the Intel i7 3820k or the 3930k?? what would the real advantage of the 3930k be over the 3820k and if its worth getting the 3930k for the price? And of course how can I squeeze more FPS out of my RIG?

CPU: Intel i7 3820
GPU: GTX 580 Dual SLI
MOBO: Asus Rampage Extreme X79
RAM: 16Gbs
HDs: 2 KINGSTON SSD NOW 200V in RAID 0
EPSON 5010 2400L 3D Projector

Will be a pretty sweet rig once built. With regards to hardware I would say the more power you can throw at it the better especially when it comes to 3D as you probably know that the performance hit is very harsh in most games. Even many older games can be a struggle to get a solid 60 fps for my single 580 GTX so I may have to go the SLI route as well to play 3D.
My recommendations for games would be, Metro 2033(mind blowing!), Batman games(very good), Borderlands, Fallout 3, Black Ops, Tomb Raider Underworld all very good.

Just divide your normal FPS by 2 to have an approximate FPS value you will get in Stereo 3D for a particular game. This means you will need twice the horsepower to run games in Stereo 3D.

For current crop of games, a single GPU is most probably not enough (unless you disable AA altogether) to get 60+ FPS in Stereo 3D.

Two 580s can def do 3D justice. May struggle here and there with being maxed out AND 3D, but otherwise, its a good choice.

If I may suggest though..

Get the 3gb cards. Track them down, make it happen. I think Amazon still has a bunch of Classified 3gb cards. You may be approaching 680 territory with those though.

But I will tell you this. I kick myself DAILY for not buying 3gb cards. Because two 580s driving triples, playing half my games in 5760x1080 and half in regular HD, I have NO SOLID REASON, AT ALL, to buy a pair of 680s. BUT, I will be, because 1.5gb falls short more often than I thought it would. I know 3D isn't the same thing as triple screens, but they put similar strains on the cards. 3gb is the way to go.

You are going to have to go for a differnt moniter as well more than likely because if you use
3DTV you are going to be stuck @ 1920 X 1080 @ 24 FPS which is also the refresh rate 3DTV uses to play games @ even if the cpu and GPU can handle more.

Your system right now would prolly do 3d justice if you had a 120 HZ 3D ready Moniter

3GB cards are more effective at extreme AA or Higher res or muti moniter they will not increase the amount of FPS. Edit you can get a higher fps at higher resolutions where other video cards run out video memory but that is well above the standard 1920 X 1080.
