Red face GTX 590 performance bug with driver series 30x.xx - 05-31-2012, 15:56 | posts: 77 | Location: Germany

Hi there,

I am encountering a nasty issue with my GTX 590 since I moved to the 300 series drivers. First I used the beta drivers 301.24 and later WHQL 301.42.

So, what is happening - it happens that while playing games there is a brief stuttering for a second and after that core 2 is at 99% usage and core 1 at about 20% and the game performance is cut to half.
The only thing fixing this again is rebooting the system. I never did encounter something like that before and I am using the card almost a year by now. This just did start after moving to the 30x.xx driver series.

So, does anybody know what this is or did anybody encounter something similar ?

I really would be happy about some information or help, thanks in advance.

I haven't encountered the exact same thing, however in the 300 series drivers I do have an odd bug where SLI just stops working at some point and any game that has an SLI mode enabled only uses GPU2 and I have to restart to get it working on both GPUs again, despite SLI mode still being enabled in the CP.

It might be a stretch but it could be related to your bug, though I haven't had it happen during a game as far as I have noticed.

the 3xx drivers are a mess hell the drivers for the 6xx series gpu are even more of a mess. I only tried the 3xx drivers for FXAA and found out there some huge bug with FXAA and Vsync being on in Swtor so i went back to 296.10 drivers

I've had nothing but trouble with 300.xx series. 301.24 and 301.42. Driver stops working in games, freezes when playing flash, higher temps, microstutter etc. Using 296.10 now, everything's perfect.

This is more or less exactly what I am encountering and you also have the same card like me. So I guess it is really the drivers and I can sit back and relax now, just hope there will be fixed drivers soon...

I haven't noticed any performance loss on 300x drivers, running 302.59 right now.

Sounds like you run into the clock-bug that happens at times... My stock 480 is affected by that, too.

Clocks would suddently and without any obvious reason be stuck either at half clocks for some other number. For me that's usually 203/405 for core/shader (or 350/701 when halved) and only happened with 30X.XX drivers so far. Even the .inf-modded 301.10 cause it.

Only actual fix so far: Going back to 296.10. Seems to mostly affect Fermi-cards. Some say it can be fixed by resetting factory-overclocking on some cards but my 480 runs on default clocks so derp.

I am having the same exact issue while playing Skyrim with my EVGA 590gtx. I noticed this irritating hitch or stuttering 20 minutes or so into gameplay. the only thing to fix it is rebooting but then it comes back. It only occurs with the latest 30x.xx driver series. I've decided to drop back to the 296.10 for now until something can be done about this.

Grab the latest 296.69 WHQL drivers here: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/for...river-release/

These are mature and more stable specially for SLI and factory overclocked 400 and 500 series cards.

I'm using them now, and it's been a joy.

The problem is, it's taking so long... It's better to wait and see, using a bug-free driver. The 302.71 drivers didn't show the 3d/2d clock bug, but had some other issues, like blurriness on the desktop fonts, crashing when watching videos, broken vsync, etc.

Strangely I had the same thing 2 days ago, after some extensive BF3 gaming
I noticed that SLI disappeared and cannot be seen / enabled in NVCPL...

Restart did not help, have powered down and took out the card - then put it back again, powered on and suddenly SLI is back there.

What could this be? 301.42 drivers here.

Anyone else with this problem, is it drivers or a bad card?

Buddy there are others having the same problem, I'd stick with latest 296's drivers if I were you... There are the 296.88 now...

Every time I tried to use 30x.xx with my 590 I got polygon artifacts after an hour or so of gameplay (D3). Someone here suggested 296.69 and this version works very good with no hickups.

I think I am having a bad card. 2 days ago on start there was no SLI. No video output from GPU2, sometimes on reset it gives 1 long and 3 short beeps... noting helped (reseating the card, cmos clearing, installing other drivers etc.). It lasted for 2 days, and suddenly today on start SLI is back there. It stays there although BF3 crashed 2 times already today (the game simply hardlocks with brumming sound).

What do you think guys, is it the bad/dying card I'm having, or the drivers?

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I have a GTX 590 and play a lot of StarCraft 2. Every 300 series driver I have tried has problems with this game (possibly others too). I was experiencing the stuttering bug, but now more commonly I am getting an issue where my monitor looses sync and the game freezes for a bit. I can still hear the sound going on. Sometimes it recovers but sometimes I have to reboot. It's making me lose ladder matches!

I don't have any issues with 296.10 drivers though... Any ideas?
