authenticator is free on android and ios, same as for swtor and rift. if you don't have those, you have to pay obviously, but it's up to you. I myself don't use authenticators after having issues with them, just have a rock solid password. I got hacked before on my wow account, reported it, got it sorted within a few hours, so no big issues there.

I use winauth myself (nice free windows version of the auth), i used the source code for it and put it together myself (just to be sure). I have it setup to show the number as a bit map image instead of the direct number and it's all set to only work on my PC under my account.

It's not as secure as a dedicated key fob (which i'm not willing to buy), but it's more secure than not having one at all (as i don't have a phone that can use the free version).

My WoW account got hacked once (i think this was right around the time when they started the whole merged accounts under Battle.net). Was nice. Whoever hacked it didn't seem to steal anything. Leveled my Death Knight to 80 (Pre-Cata), got me some half decent gear, and a nice sum of gold.... was even still a month of game time left from a 60-day card that was applied to the account... which he probably did just in case, so that were i to notice, none of his personal information could be tracked.

All very true (though lag/latency tends to be bad for me) but the sad reality is that the game might "work straight out of the box" but it just doesn't work very well for a good number of people, including myself.

Honestly, I expected better of Blizzard. After all they've had nearly a decade of experience with World of Warcraft and Diablo III had both an extended beta and a stress test. As others have said it does look very much like they rushed the game out before it was ready (as laughable as that may sound for a game that has been in development for as long as Diablo III has)

Well my first instance of error 37.

I gotta say, this was my first and will be my last Blizzard game. I am no stranger to log in issues and day one gaming issues but the general consensus is that day one will always be pretty bad for most new big name titles and then slowly but surely things should start to get better.

D3 is the only game in which things have gotten worse, the lag and in game stutter doesn't seem to be getting any better, the auction house has gone from working in full to being totally hit and miss with half the equipment no longer on it, gems etc and now I can't login in at all.

Oh we keep getting messages about downtime, log in issues, server side updates and even a small game patch but apart from some nerfs it seems to have done bugger all to actually improve the issues that quite a lot of people are suffering from.

Servers are STILL down, absolutely unbelievable. They should be offering cash back as an apology to anyone who purchased the game from them.

Selling a product that (quite obviously) doesn't have the back end hardware to support it, is nothing short of scandalous.

Im in and have been playing the whole day, better said, dying vs diablo, finally did it with the help of a friend (partial help, he had to leave after 2nd phase because his gear was broken xD, killed 3rd phase with half of my gear broken too )

Btw diablo is MUCH harder now with so many teleports for ranged, first phase is a pain, second phase run run and 3rd phase its okay.

But yeah, some buttons answer really late, which shows kinda overbooking on the server

Fact. This game is fantastic. I find, and this goes for most things, the people who voice their opinions are the ones that are complaining. This isn't an insult directed at anyone, just an observation. Personally I love this game and think it's fantastic. Inferno is a bit stupid and the always online thing isn't preferable, but it's definitely not a game breaker. For example, if the servers go down I will go do something else. The weather is BEAUTIFUL here, so going outside is usually a good idea. In fact it's probably better the servers go down so I can actually get something done around here .

In any case, I got annoyed with Inferno being almost impossible so I started levelling up a Wizard but realized I like my Daemon Hunter so much more. Not sure why I picked the other ranged class to level up, but whatever. Perhaps I'll try to tackle some more Inferno before going to the gym. Decisions decisions...

That's a personal point of view I assume you aren't having issues but the game, at least here, is easily worse than it has been at any point.

The actual game itself is fine, I like it but the always on anti cheat system is failing the game so badly.

Day 2 Could login without issue, quickly and without problem. (Today) Several attempts required and when it finally does load it takes ages to login
Day 2 Could select character and be in game in seconds. (Today) Select character try to start game and get another new error msg saying the game session could not be created. again when it finally does work it takes ages to load
Day 2 Auction house is in place and fully working, for the most part (Today) Over half the equipment can't be accessed from the auction house, no Gems etc
Day 2 Very little noticeable in game lag (Today) Constant stutter, rubber banding and game effecting lag

That's following at least one server side update and one game patch, not really sure how it can be said that things are better today than they were when I first started playing it 2 days after launch??

A quick edit after reading D3 forums.

Seems a lot of the issues are over 'scheduled' maintenance. Though the posters at the forums seem to be having a laugh with the definition of 'scheduled'.

So the EU servers are down again for the second day in a row? Oh for f***'s sake!!!

I'm at work during the day and only have time to play games for a few hours in the evening, a time when Blizzard deems it important to do server maintenance, etc. This is the third time in a week when I've not been able to play the game when I've wanted to. What an absolute disgrace. I can understand the need to maintain servers for online gameplay but wouldn't it be nice if while that was happening we could fall back on the offline single player? No?

Let's face it, the only reason this online DRM exists in Diablo III is because the Real Money Auction House would not work without it. Blizzard are only interested in milking as much money out of their customer base as possible. I see under Breaking News that they are investigating latency issues relating to the Auction House; there's no mention at all of investigating latency issues in the actual game!!! You'd think that would be of a higher priority...
