Default AGP card to play 720p mkv movies - 05-23-2012, 07:00 | posts: 7

Hi All,

I am not good at graphic cards. I am asking help on AGP card on a very old system.

System:

Intel 845ge chipset
Pentium 4 2.4ghz Prescott
1 GB RAM
Windows XP
Integrated Intel graphics media accelerator
AGP 4x 1.5v slot

Whenever I try to play 720p mkv movie, the computer crashes.

I would like to know if by adding an AGP 4x 1.5v card to the machine, will it be able to play 720p mkv movie? I dont do gaming or any other heavy resource work on the machine. Just want to be able to play these HD movies.

How much watts PSU will be required to handle the GPU?

Please help.

Regards,
Pratik

Those old integrated chips are crap when it comes to doing pretty much anything. You should be able to get a decent AGP GFX card (either x8 or x4, either will work) off ebay or similar and that should help greatly when playing videos.

I've got a machine from 9 years ago I built to play all my old games on but that can run 1080p fine with an nVidia 6800 GT. Power wise most of the lower end AGP cards (nVidia 6200 and the like) will work off just the power the slot provides, whereas some of the beefier ones need a molex connector (or 2 for the top end ones) to give them enough juice. 300W ought to do it.

Hope that helps

MKV is just a container. What is the content? There isn't that many AGP cards that had proper H.264 acceleration and as far as I know, 6000 series had quite some problem with some formats other than MPEG2. Lower end 6000 had better video acceleration.

My old P4 3.0 with a Geforce 6800 128MB was enough for 720p content. But now on AGP you only have the HD3450 or HD4650 wich are enough for that.

Should be able to, it's certainly worth trying. It can run fairly recent games at low settings.

Better of waiting for decent ATI if you can.

Edit-
I think the 8600GT does hardware decoding via Purevideo, not sure if AGP though.

i am getting 6800gt a bit costly for $ 50 (5 yrs old)... also will it work on my motherboard's 4x only slot since 6800gt is 8x?

one more thing i noticed is 6200 has h264 acceleration whereas 6800gt doesnt have it..

Yeah as long as it's in H.264 or MPEG2 format.

The only 6xxxx series Geforce that doesn't do hardware decoding is the 6800GT/Ultra.
