HOT on the heels of the 680 or level with it?

Cheers.

7970 is pretty damn close. It get's on par at high resolutions (2560 x 1440/1600). CFX scaling is also generally better than SLI, when it works.

7970 When OC'd around 1.2ghz trades blows with a GTX 680 at 1.1-1.15 ghz.

So IMHO the 7970 is the better choice with more Vram.

But to each their own. It all depends if you want CUDA or Physx.

Yeah when both are clocked, they are around the same performance, but id go for the 7970, as it has more v-ram, and is now cheaper, id only go 680, if wanting Nvidia specific feature.

If you are in for saving a bit of money because as the 5850 before it, the 7950 performs nearly identically to the 7970 when run at the same clocks.

Should be able to find one with a nice custom solution for ~300 squids.
