Default How Long Is Core-i7 3960x Going to Be Top Dog? - 05-02-2012, 09:58 | posts: 167

This chip has already been out since Late November, Early December, doesn't intel have a new top dog up it's sleeve? Who wants to spend $1000 on a 6 month old chip?

What kind of business model is this???

Anyone have any details on their next beast?

Still the fastest CPU out there by a long shot, except for the 8-core SB-E Xeons, but they can't be OCed. IB is only about 5% faster than SB, and you've got 2 more cores on top of them and probably more OCing headroom if you cool it properly.

And the next top dog... 3980x seemingly disappeared from the release schedule. Not sure why... I was holding off building a 3960x box for work, hoping to catch the 3980x instead, but meh, going to pull the trigger and be done with it.

Actually Microcenter has the Intel Sandy Bridge-E Core i7 3930K for ~$499.98 or something like that. The introductory price was ~$650 when it was first released and the MSRP is something like ~$555. A further price drop would be nice but I just bought one so it wouldn't do me much good,.....

Note that only MicroCenter has insanely low prices like this. Other retailers are unable to match MicroCenter's prices.

MicroCenter is selling the 3930K for $499.99
NewEgg is selling the 3930K for $569.99

Canadian prices:
NCIX is selling the 3930K for $629.98
NewEgg Canada is selling the 3930K for $599.99

Looking at other Canadian retailers, $629 is the norm in Canada, NewEgg is the exception. However, in the States, the same product is cheaper and is even cheaper at MicroCenter.

amd announced they were going to focus more on low and mid end and give up on the high end.

so this is intel's 'do whatever the **** they want' business model. they probably could get away with not releasing a new chip for 2 years and still have the fastest chip out there.

last i checked, the 22nm ivy bridge e chips arent due for a fair while as well.
