Default HD 7970 and dual monitors. - 04-30-2012, 14:30 | posts: 178 | Location: USA

Hi guys.

I'm coming from an HD6970 which has two DVI connectors for my two monitors. Looking over various HD7970 cards I see that they have one DVI connector. How do I hook up two monitors? Do I somehow use the mini-display ports which I know nothing about.

Thanks.

btw I was thinking about ordering this card:

Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 OC 3GB DDR5 HDMI/DVI-I/Dual Mini DP PCI-Express Graphics Card 11197-01-40G

It should also have a spare HDMI port if your monitor supports that. if not, you need to use those mini display ports to DVI. Check to see if the card comes with one, I saw some that do, but most don't.

If your 2nd screen doesn't have DP it looks like the card has a HDMI so you could just use DVI and HDMI out on it.

So I can use the DPI port on the 7970 for my primary monitor and something like this for my secondary?

DP to DVI adapters have to change the signal i think (guessing), HDMI to DVI just changes the connection so the adapter would be cheaper.

My Primary monitor is an Asus PA246 and has DVI, HDMI, and Display Port (not a mini).

My Secondary monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster T240 has DVI, HDMI, and VGA.

The Sapphire HD7970 has:

1 x Dual-Link DVI
1 x HDMI
2 x Mini-DisplayPort
DisplayPort 1.2

So given these facts how should I hook up my two monitors in your opinion.

If you're looking at this card: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814102982

Then it comes with HDMI to DVI, you'd plug your DVI cable into the dongle instead of directly into the video card.

EDIT: I read that your monitors have HDMI and DVI ports. Personaly I'd use HDMI for the main and DVI for the secondary. But either way works.

I would use the following connectors:

Primary display --> DP (use mini DP to DP connector the card comes with).

Secondary display--> DVI (use directly).

I know the card does not come with a DP cable, but I would buy one.

Now why would I not use HDMI?

It's becuase it is limited to 1920x1200 (unlike DP and DVI (dual link)).
DP and DVI are true Monitor standards. HDMI is HDTV standard.

The driver would detect and automatically select DP display as Primary and DVI display as secondary. Also, use DP port 1 (the one farthest from the MB with the card plugged in). Although if there is only one DP display, it does not matter. You can use either.

Having said that, there is no issue if you use HDMI provided the max you want to go is 1920x1200 for a single display.
