Default Preferable PhysX card choice for hybrid? - 04-30-2012, 16:59 | posts: 4,380 | Location: Omicron Persei Windows 8 Pro WMC

Hi lads and gals,

A simple question. As seen in the poll, which of the 3 cards would give me the best performance regarding Physx. This is for my hybrid build. Currently using a 9600GT since my GT520 is serving my HTPC. An important criteria is also power consumption.

Since many specs are available, i don't know what to choose:
1. EVGA 9600GT Superclocked
256-bit mem bus, 64 CUDA cores

2. GT520
64-bit mem bus, 48 CUDA cores

3. GT430
128-bit mem bus, 96 CUDA cores

Does a different architecture and/or memory bus also affect Physx performance or not?

GT 430 should be best for PhysX due to highest CUDA core count. But, according to one thread, GT 520 seems also sufficient for PhysX http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread....04#post4292304

Though, IIRC, 9600 GT has something special about its Shaders. It has only 64 of them, but performance is close to 112SP 8800GT. Or maybe it's just due to higher clocks. Bah. Can't remember.

considered you play with resolutions above 1600x900 and/or with quality settings:

anything less than a 9600gt as 2nd card will most of the time not make any real diff.

with GTX560 and up, no additional card for physx needed. most stuff will run better on a 560ti than on a 460ti+9600gt.

i would replace the amd+nvidia with a 560/570...

with a 560 on up a dedicated physics card would help immensly, you just need a powerful enough card to complement your main gpu. the more powerful the main card is the more powerful the physics card has to be

As for some, i'm staying with AMD as my main card. I don't consider going NV only an option. Guess i will take a GT430 later on. The 9600GT will do fine until then i guess.

Cuda core number is the most important for PhysX
so i have chosen 430

but 9600gt would have been nice too, this card is just a few below

also why not go to 450gts? the price is cut down to wipe the stock it is few buck more but great improvement, on 2nd hand you might found more heavy GPU for the price of your 430, like 460, 470 ...

i hope it have helped you

thanks for this thread. gt430 seems great; low profile, small little card with 96cores. Arma3 is coming up and I dont want to swap my 5850, devs said game will include phsyx. is there any chance hybrid setup will cause problems, losing any features or things like that??

I would actually recommend the 550Ti for a future proof PhysX card. It would be an extra 20-25 bucks, but you're going to get a lot more bang for your buck, plus it will hold up a lot longer and perform a lot better. Plus IIRC it should have even a bit better power consumption being a newer card.

This thread is outdated already and nowadays i would vote for a lowprofile GT640. It has around 300+ CUDA cores, much more than the 430 has.

Yes the gt 430 works very good for a hybrid setup.

I would suggest the Gigabyte one "GV-N430OC-1GL" the heat sink has the most thermal mass to dissipate heat.

I'm using some 7970s in combo with a GTX460 and its worked just fine for every physx game i've played so far (Settings maxed)

Played Mafia 2/Batman AA/Batman AC/Borderlands2

Great little card for PHYSX.

What do you Think about the Nvidia 640 with a 7970?

I found a zotac fanless version, and it should be without additional power pin!

Does the mix work even with the Nvidia 600series?

i just tried a 640 with a 580 and it improved my mafia2 bench by around 20fps...managed to get over 70fps...

but sadly I couldnt get it 2 run bl2 well on high. also the fan noise put me off. if you can find a fanless version i'd say go for it...

There is a zotac "zone version" fanless, I have liquid cooling so I prefer not to put any fan!
But I don't know if the Mod-patch will work with the 600 series in a mix with Ati

Did you try the difference with Batman?

sorry no i did not. i think people have got an nvidia card + amd working.

ask shagula a member here.

p.s if i had got the zotac fanless version i might still be perservering with the 640. but as i tried mafia2 + bl2 and only one worked and the fan was @stock was whiney it was no-no.
