Default BSOD at every restart. - 04-25-2012, 16:03 | posts: 2,326 | Location: Pune, India

Hi Friends,

Im facing a strange problem here. Everytime i start my pc and log on to windows i get a bsod. Even after restarting same thing happens.

Now, i press f8 at startup and start with the setting called last known good config that worked and boom the problem seems gone. No problem as yet.

The bsod reported as a registry error, so i wonder if my pc had a bad registry. I wonder if the registry has been restored.

My pc seems seems fine now as i played a few games and watched a movie for an hour.

I wonder what could be the possible cause for bsod? What are your opinions?

Thanks,

Viren.

next time you have a BSOD see if you can read teh STOP code, it will usually look like this:

0x00000000005E

and maybe have a filename under it.

This is the best way to tell what is causing them. For now what you can do is go into the Windows Event Viewer and look for Critical Errors during the time that you were having problems. Let us know if you find anything.

Could be a dying hard drive. If you think it's the registry, couldn't hurt to try a registry cleaner to get rid of empty lines. Make a backup before you do that though.

Unplug all USB devices and see if the problem stops.

I have a USB pen that will every single time, cause my overclock to reset, doing a double post, if it is plugged in when I boot.
It did the same thing in my previous PC as well.
Works fine when plugged in after windows loads.

I've had and seen numerous other booting problems caused by USB devices.

Another strange one was when I had an 8800GT.
A new revision of video driver came out and my windows would take ages to finish loading, timing out for a few minutes just before login.
Once windows loaded, my mouse didnt work until it was re-plugged in.
If I used a different USB port or used an older video driver it booted fine.

USB devices can cause weird things to happen, especially when overclocked.

I have a usb kbd and mouse and sometimes the kbd isn't detected till i log on to windows but other than that i do not have any usb devices running and also it didn't give me any problem till the last week when i experienced frequent bsods and I think the real problem was a corrupt registry because i did not get any bsod after i restarted using the setting known as the last good config that worked.

It may have been an unstable CPU overclock.
Resetting the CMOS put it back to stock speeds.

Even though it worked for a long time, components wear out.
The CPU may have needed a little more vcore to compensate.

Nah, thats not the trouble, it was really the registry and restoring it has solved the problem atleast as of now. If i may face the same situation later i will keep your suggestion in mind.

Thanks.
