Default 990FXA-UD7 memory ram - 04-18-2012, 19:00 | posts: 13

I have this mobo 990fxa-ud7 and its support ECC ram

my actualy ram now is 2x4GB corsair vengeance 1.5V 9-9-9-28 1600Mhz and its working with 9-9-9-28 at 1866mhz with 1.65V but its non-ECC unbuffered.

there is memory ram with ECC but its little abit expensive , can you explain about ECC,buffered, fully buffered memory ,

its cost more money but why ? and how this ECC (Error Code Correction) works when windows is already load etc ?

I search on internet and see my mobo work with ECC(unbuffered)

if i get memory that is ECC(buffered, fully buffered) did it will work with my mobo ?

Thanks.

It's only really for servers. I think it makes the ram more stable/less prone to errors.

Completely different way it's read I think. Most consumer chips don't support ECC memory. Mine does, as it's a workstation chip. Something to do with ECC being read in serials as opposed to parallel for "normal" RAM.

I'm pretty sure the 990FX does not support ECC RAM.

ECC is enabled by default in BIOS for compatible ECC memories.

Don't be pretty sure

Rather strange that ECC memory is not mentioned in the specs.

Edit-
I just checked the ASUS 990FX manual and it supports ECC, so you could well be right.

Why are you so sure it's supported?
Because Gigabyte have answer this motherboard support ECC maybe ? thats why im more sure than you.

if you still not believe u can buy it

Guaranteed-compatible with the Giga-Byte GA-990FXA-UD7
Part Number: CT2KIT25672BA1339
Module Size: 4GB kit (2GBx2)
Package: 240-pin DIMM
Feature: DDR3 PC3-10600
Specs: DDR3 PC3-10600 • CL=9 • Unbuffered • ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.5V • 256Meg x 72 •

My question normaly is
If i have ECC buffered/fully buffered did it will work ?
Because gigabyte told only about ECC unbuffered , no asnwer about buffered/fully buffered memory

Afaik buffered & unbuffered ram can't be mixed, you need to use either one or the other.
Also, ECC ram error checking will be disabled if non-ECC is installed with it.

ECC is also slightly slower than regular memory, for that and the added cost it's not really worth buying unless you're running a server....

yes , ECC memory is around 2% slower.
