I wouldnt use Eset security software if it was for free,i aint joking im serious, its the only piece of software i used over many many years that....

1.Allowed my pc to be portscanned successfully.

2.Happily let lots of malware/rootkits run riot all over my test laptop while testing...use it at your peril.

Its a shame as its a really light engine, problem is it dont pick up anything, its Anti-virus signature detection is crap.

As for using free software i vouch for Comodo and malwarebytes( free and retail using realtime scanner) combined with (retail)Winpatrol.

Edit...ooops i didnt realise i had already commented in this thread

I bought Bitdefender AntiVirus Plus 2012 (winner of the AV Comparatives 2012) for £11.99, this licence was for three PCs too!

Superb value for money

Used F-Secure last year (as it won the 2011 awards). Was good but always seemed to have a very slow download speed grabbing updates

Take the AV-Comparatives results with a grain of salt. The testing isn't done based on "real-world" conditions, it's done based specifically on lab conditions. They test detection and removal of malware already on the system and don't take into consideration the ability of the software to prevent malware from infecting the system....which is where Norton, Comodo and Webroot seem to do the best.

ty. I try. lol

If you're going to go strictly on detection and removal of active malware....get the paid version of Malwarebyte's AntiMalware. Then you'll be less likely to be removing malware later as it's inbound detection is second to none.

I've tried a few. Mcafee, Kaps, maleware, system mechanic. Hands down the best i've used is the Comodo suite. It found 5 viruses that mcafee or malware did not find, in files that had been on my computer for 2 years. They were attached to mp3's. Plus I love the sandbox feature for running programs I'm not sure about. My 2 cents on it.

Attached to mp3's means you pirated the music and they just embedded a website link into the mp3, not necessarily a virus, more a spam advertising thing.

I've actually been pretty impressed with Avast....but it's performance impact under certain conditions and it's scanning performance are both deterents for me. I love the new UI though....which could be improved greatly by simply removing the marketing BS. That's the only flaw I've found in the Avast UI since ver6...

You're correct, Comodo was the only program i had used that found them all.
