Comp freezing - I'm going nuts.. Help please! -
04-17-2012, 12:43
Well.. as the title says.. I need some help.. again..
Less then 3 weeks ago, I had to replace my mobo..
ofc I had to reinstall windows, so it's more or less a fresh install..
But from time to time the comp just freezes.. the mouse doesn't move, the clock doesn't move.. it's just frozen..
It can happen why idling, or why gaming, doesn't matter.. Only a hard reset brings it back to life..
Overclock is stable, temps are fine, drivers are up to date got MS essentials and BitDefender 2012..
Also there's nothing suspicious in the event viewer..
Any clue what could be causing this, or what to do?

If I had to hazard a guess then I'd say a likely culprit is your PSU. Have you got a different one you can try of the same or higher power rating?

How can you say your OC is stable when the comp is freezing ?
Kill the OC and see if it still does it
If it does, check Event Logs (Windows Logs > System)
Look for anything with ERROR or CRITICAL next to it around the time of the freezing

Run memtest for about an hour, intel burn test - 10 cycles on high and chkdsk.
If no errors are found on those, try different gpu then psu.
How long have you had that LC Power 600W ?

May be that it's the psu..
It's almost 3 years old.. powered on 24/7..
I just don't have any spare to try..
Just a few minutes ago it froze again.. I pushed the reset button, it restarted, and frozen after 2 or 3 minutes with a sound loop (brrrrr in the speakers)..
Pulled the plug, powered on again, now it's running for 10 mins maybe..
memtest is fine btw
Why I'm saying my oc is stable? cuz it was running fine till this week.. even with stress testing..
gpu should be ok imho
hdd's fine aswell
Last thing before the hang in the event viewer:
First hang:
--File System Filter 'FileInfo' (6.1, 2009-07-14T01:34:25.000000000Z) has successfully loaded and registered with Filter Manager.
--File System Filter 'bdfsfltr' (6.1, 2011-07-27T17:23:21.000000000Z) has successfully loaded and registered with Filter Manager.
Then hang and reboot:
The previous system shutdown at 16:27:05 on 17.4.2012 was unexpected.
Second hang:
same as above..
Although, noticed one thing.. a warning:
Custom dynamic link libraries are being loaded for every application. The system administrator should review the list of libraries to ensure they are related to trusted applications.
There's a ton of services starting and stopping right after windows starts up

try running OCCT and do the PSU tester. if it freezes during that it most likely is your PSU. what you have sounds like a cheapo generic brand.

Your videocard is using about 150 W of power; source: http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-460-review/13
Using OHM's law, 150/12=12.5. Rounded up, 13 is the amperes that it is draining from the 12 volt rail.
You did not give us a lot of info about your PSU, so I took a generic one, and this seems seems to have a maximum of 14 and 15 amperes on it's two dual 12V rails; source: http://www.moka-pc.ro/coolere-ventil...enpower-2.html
Since the the 12v rail only offers 15 amperes, each, the total rated amperage is still going to be 15 for the videocard and doing a math, now that the total REAL output of the PSU is 480W, the amperage on the 12v rail is not 15 amperes anymore, but less than that, maybe 12 amperes or so, someone smarter than me can give a precise number, i just assume that 80% of 15 is 12. And you mentioned that your PSU is 3 years old, that increased the chances to have a even smaller Wattage output than 480W, although a 80plus certification will guarantee that the PSU will NEVER go under 480W in your PSU's case. - im an idiot, that is not how 80 plus works, the psu still has 600W, that is energy waste, it still can offer about 14-15 amperes on 12v rail but barely to keep the videcard stable
Even if the 460 gtx gets most of it's power from the PCIe slot (PCIe slot can give max 150W), the power still comes from the PSU trough the ATX from the mobo to the PCIe connector, and PCIe connectors in case the power goes over 150W, but the amperage is the same.
To conclude, your videocard is killing the PSU's 12v rail

You replaced the MOBO with the same one or a different one? And what do you mean by modified BIOS in your system listing for the MOBO? And why was it replaced?
And as others have mention have you tried lowering your OC?

Sorry, forgot to edit my specs..
The new mobo is a striker extreme with the latest official bios.
Replaced cause a cat pissed on my last mobo..
I can remove the oc as suggested but as said, I really don't think that's what's causing the problems..

You are right I also heard about 75W somewhere else but i just got my info from wikipedia

PCI Express 2.1 increased the power output from an x16 slot to 150W so that some high-performance graphics cards can be run from the slot power alone. Optional connectors add 75W (6-pin) or 150W (8-pin) power for up to 300W total.

Anubis: those errors are overclocking related, i think that your PSU is the culprit, since the 12V rail is oversaturated, God knows how stable the 3.3v and 5v rails are aanymore. The 3.3V and 5V are powering the CPU and RAM, maybe you should look at the consumption of them if you know how, because i don't. In anycase, try to power your system with a PSU with at least 20 amperes on the 3.3V and 5V rails and at least 30 amperes on the 12V rail. Seasonic and Corsair have those requirements even on the low wattage PSUs from 450W. The price is ok for me at least, starting from 90$.

I sincerely hope it's not the psu, cause they're bloody expensive around here. Atleast the good ones..

Ok, let's say it's the psu (but I still think it's not....)
What to buy?
Enermax NAXN 82+ 650W Quiet Power Supply ENP650AWT-B = 76€
COOLER MASTER GX-LITE SERIES 700w = 72€
CORSAIR ENTHUSIAST SERIES TX650 V2 = 85€
CORSAIRCX2 (CMPSU-600CXV2EU) 600w = 64€

I had exactly same problem. My motherboard cant handle 1600Mhz on my freaking RAMs, So I drop freq a little to 1333MHz and problem disappear.

actually my memory is underclocked from 5-5-5-18-23 800mhz to 5-5-5-17-22 754mhz @ 2.1v
And memtest doesn't give any errors so dunno..
But reading from your experience, and the thread I posted earlier, might idd be something wrong with the timings..

You can't troubleshoot crashing if you leave your system overclocked
Even if it was 100% stable until now, hardware can start to fail and no longer handle the same OC
You have to start with a stock system and eliminate things 1 by 1

Assuming your system is stable when not overclocked, and that you are running at 1:1 with the fsb (754/2 *9 = 3.4 Ghz) start by easing up on your memory timings and see if that helps. You could also try running your cpu at an 8 multi with 425FSB and 850Mhz memory with looser timings, if your motherboard allows it and try to pass a 12hour prime95 blend run.
If that doesn't help try slowly reducing your overclock until you start to feel better stability. If none of that works then it's more likely to be a difefrent component such as the psu.

OK so just as i saw, there are two 12v rails, combined they should give the 460 gtx enough juice, so the PSU might not be the problem here, but i am still suspicios, I do not want to give you bad advice, maybe solve the memory/OC issues and go for the new PSU solution as last resort if nothing helped.
For PSU, if you want a cricket in your PC (risk of coil whine), get any Corsair PSU, altought they are one of the best PSUs out there, that is my only experience with PSU, i think Enermax make good PSU also.
One last thing, your specs say modded bios, maybe try using default BIOS and set everything at stock, wait a few weeks and if no freezes arise then it is a bad OC and the PSU is fine.

Guess the problem went away somehow.. At least for now..
~2 days with stress testing / gaming / watching hd movies and no crash or instability yet.. Hope it stays this way..
