I think they're idiots.
For years people have been speculating about a 24-70 with IS. Tamron caught on and is giving us one, whereas canon just goes ahead and skips IS on the 24-70, instead putting it on a pair of slow primes.
And a 24 + a 28mm 2.8? For $800 and $850?? I think they've lost the plot. Even if its aimed at video, what about photographers? Why don't we get anything in the mid-range price segment?

Agreed. No one purchases a prime lens that is 2.8. IMO, these both should have been 1.4 lenses.

nikon's 24-70 doesn't have VR (or IS) too afaik. tamron has a new 24-70 with VR, but it's just an f/4 though.

The EF 100mm 2.8 macro lens is one of their most popular primes (I own one), followed by the EF-s 60mm 2.8 macro (I used to own one). Both of these are great lenses.
Lots of people buy 2.8 primes
I agree that wide angle ones would have been better at 1.8 or 1.4 though.

IS on the 28mm and 24mm is "almost" pointless. I shoot Nikon full frame and own a 16-35VR F/4, the VR on this lens is really not needed and I tend to shoot at F/8 or smaller most of the time and still don't need it. Blur through hand shake is not that visible at 28mm or under on full frame. I can shoot at around 1/8 second at 24mm (with VR off) and get acceptable results. I guess it would be more beneficial to have a wider aperture of 1.8 or 1.4 on those lenses.
