My first question is, can all phones work on a prepaid plan if the phone supports the frequency on a network? Or can a carrier disallow me to use certain phone? I reside in canada.

I am looking for something similar to the LG Keybo2(enV3), where I can use keys to dial a number and not a touchscreen... with a qwerty keyboard. LG Keybo2(enV3) is a perfect example but unfortunately it does not support HSPA+ on Telus network (850/1900).

Of course I am not looking to pay an extremely high price for a phone, must be relatively cheap.

Thank you.

Note: I am afraid to get a new CDMA phone like the LG Rumour I used to have. The coverage was so bad in my area it was almost unusable.

normally its the phone that disallows you to use certain carriers. some phones are carrier locked (separate from their supported bands). check what bands your carrier supports, and buy a carrier-unlocked phone that supports those bands.

i dont think they can disallow you to use a certain phone on their network. its mostly just to do with the support the network can provide. if your phone does not support your carrier's 3g/hsdpa bands, you kinda cant do much about it.

the only thing that they may not be able to help you with (if you use a device that they normally do not support) is that you may lose access to your carrier's own app store if they have one. not really an issue with the iphone and android phones since they have their own app stores, but can be annoying for those (if there are any) who still use symbian phones.
