Exclamation VLC issue with choppy playback - 05-18-2011, 01:28 | posts: 14 | Location: up high

Hey all,

This is my first post in this forum, so thanks in advance for all your input

I have looked everywhere for a fix for this and NO ONE has anything relevant to add so far....

Lately, VLC playback of video, especially MKV's is uber choppy, like watching stop-frame animation.....aarrrggghhh!

This still happens after a fresh install of windows. All drivers are up to date. I am fairly knowledgeable of computers and I usually am the one people come to to fix these type of problems, but I cannot get this one.

YES- I have went to using MPC-HT and it works fine, using the DXVA....

But my question is about VLC---why has this started, and it seems to be a common problem after I googled it.

Thank you again for your helpful help.....

Few simple questions to get started:

1)- Are you running the latest AMD drivers for your graphics card?

2)- Are you running the latest version of VLC? If so, have you tried reinstalling the program?

3)- Can you list the details of the MKV file you are trying to view.

Tried another movie last night and it was still choppy in VLC. In MPC-HC it played flawless. I love VLC and I am stuck....am I going to have to switch to MPC or is there a fix?

Surely there is an answer to this out there.....

Last i checked, VLC's DXVA was still experimental, and was temperamental with certain drivers, so there might be a certain driver that works better than the newest, as i know from personal experience, that while for games newest is usually the best, but for my HTPC partition, that is rarely the case.

Is it essential you use DXVA though, as while im not a fan of VLC, it does have reasonable CPU usage, even with 1080p footage, and VLC was originally designed as a player that while not the best quality, it would be the one least affected by drivers and other operating system issues.
