If you got a bench that proves what you're saying, which is that you have a card made of gold, then post them up, prove me wrong.

I'm going to overclock the CPU as soon as I get a cooling system. I really wouldn't risk overclocking with the stock fan.

what most of the guys here are saying is generally correct.
raising anisotropic filtering to 16x won't really take a hit.
How you know that you have a cpu bottleneck is pretty simple, just really crank up the video settings (4x/8x AA, ultra high quality) and compare them to medium quality settings. if they're generally around the same fps then for certain its a cpu bottleneck. OC that shiz.
on stock fan you can get away with 3.3ghz on stock volts

I actually overclocked it to 3.2ghz, but it was overheating very quickly. I overclocked it in the BIOS by increasing the multiplier, but I'm not sure that it was the best idea. Would I need to increase the volts?
It was most stable when left on Auto.
This was my first attempt at overclocking, so I guess it was inevitable that I hit a brick wall.
What's the best way to overclock the CPU?

Those drivers are brilliant!
It really increased my FPS on Napoleon Total War! Now I'm hitting a minimum of about 25FPS on the larger maps, when I used to get at least 18FPS when hovering over forests with the old drivers.
Thanks!

Monitor temps and provide better cooling if necessary.
Increasing the voltage when its already too hot will hasten the death of your CPU.
Read some overclocking 101s !

see how far you can get on stock volts. how was it 'overheating'? what are your temperatures at? for black edition cpus, the way to go is definitely multiplier overclocking.
did you notice an improvement after overclocking that 200mhz?

I did notice a bit of an improvement.
I have a black edition CPU.
It was hitting 60c whenever I tried a stablity test on AMD overdrive, and it was hitting 45c at idle and 50c whenever I started moving the mouse and opening programs.
I had to keep the side of the case open to even achieve the temps listed.

I have just updated to CCC 10.9 and installed the latest App Profiles and all I can say is wow
I can now play Crysis Warhead on Maximum settings with playable framerates, and one setting lower is smooth as butter with my 2 x 5770
These 5770s get better every driver release - if I compare to the day I first installed my 1st one of these cards, I was dissapointed - but every release they just seem to get better and better

What do you mean "app profiles".
And I agree, the HD 5770 seems to perform really well with the right drivers. I downloaded the Xtreme-G drivers yesterday, and I can already notice huge FPS increases.
Bad company 2 went from 30-35FPS to 45-65FPS;
I've also went from 18FPS on the ARMA 2 benchmark to 25FPS with everything maxed.
