You don't have to overclock if you buy a CPU with a high enough clock speed.

You could always buy the ones that are already overclocked and have a custom cooler, they usually come with a guarentee.

Probably good that you don't unless you learn well how to do it. Walking into an OC without the proper knowledge of how to do so is what ruins the CPU. Proper knowledge, care, and common sense will get you a good OC that will not detriment your hardware. Sorry, if this seems like a "smarmy" post. I assure you it is not.

I'm glad I bought my 2 5870s now.

I don't use the ATI rig because I like my nHancer/PhysX too much but when DX11 games show up (and if it's actually worth it), it's nice to know I've got the hardware to run them.

I was hoping for a December release on the GT300 but it looks like that's not happening anymore.

If there are cards in December, they will go to the guys who are willing to pay Retail x 2+ for the priviledge.

I might have 5 years ago, but not anymore

This is not good news at all, my gtx280 is dying and after RMAing so many times I gave up, i was just hoping old yeller could hold out till december, an interim card would be a ridiculous waste of money.

The longer they take to get fermi out...the longer we wait for the die shrink. I wonder if the rumoured ATI redesigned card that is supposed the come out in about 12 months will hit before the fermi die shrink...that would be very interesting indeed.

Demand a GTX285 on the next RMA, citing the 280's Zotac have produced are irrevocably flawed.

I get the feeling Nvidia either have something properly amazing in the works, in which case the wait is acceptable

or

Somethings gone very wrong.

I would rather they take a little longer and get it right than ship out faulty product. Way too many companies do that now and we know how annoying it is to get buggy hardware or software...............

everyone has to start somewhere..
people are so worried about breaking parts its crazy..
my first attempt at overclocking i was like 13 with a Barton core and just started tinkering with stuff..a little reading is definitely helpful but its almost impossible to really damage stuff...

not true... if you throw enough antialiasing and a high enough res at the card it'll be gpu bound.

EPIC FAIL.....

And ill tell ya why..... People who plunked down good hard cash for there new 7 rigs aren't likely to plunk down more cash so soon for another GPU. Unless you are a GURU and just buy something new to have it, NVidia IMO seriously had one hell of an EPIC FAIL waiting as long as they are. Simply put, they dropped the ball in a time they should not have.

As Ive said many times before, im no fan boy.. but ATI wins this round hands down and most people who bought a new ATI card wont likely shell out the cash for another so soon.

I tried the waiting game before and waited and waited....for my x1800.
I said never again! By the time Fermi comes out i would've enjoyed my 5870 for 3 months...maybe more.

nVidia missed the boat. While they plan on releasing their card ATi will be working on a refresh or even new tech.

nVidia is solely to blame. The pumped out the 88xx architecture for more than 2 years.

Geeze all this doom and gloom... It's only a GPU. Matter of fact, I'm more interested in how well these new cards will fold and run other CUDA based apps than I am in strictly gaming. Looking at it from that perspective, I think ATI dropped the ball by just recycling the same tech X2. Nvidia I feel, is building for the future. ATI? Not so much.

What ? If it works what's the problem ?

Not that ATI's 5xxx is different from 4xxx which is 3xxx.

lol, u guys forget about Fusion. AMD was talking about GPU/CPU combination for a while now and thats the exact direction nV is taking.

And the 5xxx is more different than the prev gen plus new tech and feature...more so than nV.

No they haven't.
They weren't even planning to get on the boat this year.

Besides, ATI's refresh is bound by the TMSC issues as well now so i don't expect them to be ready before Fermi is, and even then i still expect Fermi to be the stronger Single, and Dual GPU solutions.

i dont know why you guys think this is so fail....the card will be dx11 and when dx11 games come you will have the card.
there has been zero new games that need a graphix monster in the last 3 months.
go get an 58xx card now if you cant wait then so instead of 60fps you can run 75 fps.
with all the port jobs on the herizion who cares, older titles are better on pc then the new junk and they can run on just about anything.

Obviously they wanted to "be on the boat", its called making money. Nvidia even told us Fermi would be out this year and now they've pretty much confirmed it won't.

and correct me if I'm wrong but the TMSC issues don't effect Nvidia yet, Fermi isn't in production. TMSC having yeild issues shouldn't have much to do with creating an engineering sample, only once a card is into production will there be shortages like AMD is suffering with the 5xxx cards.
