depends where you are going but all im going to say is this. WATER WATER WATER.

you need good boots but they depend on the type of weather you will be in not how much walking. Also a damn good sleeping bag, but also depends on the type of weather. Get water proofs and damn good warmers.

They are the base foundations for surviving. lol perhaps im going abit extreme but i would rather be over-prepared than be under-prepared.

space blanket and pocket chainsaw? what are they?

Haha... This may be OT but when I saw the bonus items, I pictured them leaving camp and the bears drinking the scotch and talking like rich brits. Bear One: I say, this sure is a mighty fine beverage. Bear Two: Quite quite.

First you need to find out where you are going, what activities are planned AND MOST IMPORTANTLY.....

Do the people present possess the necessary skills to be doing what you are attempting?

Get back to us when you know some more. I do a bit of the outdoor stuff and things can turn ****ty fast without the right preparation, skills and equipment.

Is bagpacking some tweaked version of backpacking? If so, do tell. If not, how long are you going for, and how long is the hike?

How long are you going to stay in the forest/where ever ?
What are you going to do daily, walk long distances ? The more you walk, the more you need water. Also depends how hot there is.
Can you make fire in fores, are there wood, is it some kind of natural park where you cant make fire. If you cant make fire, take food which you can make without fire, even if you can make fire, take something if it's raining or your lighter runs out of fuel, etc something unexpected happens.

Sleeping bag + sleeping pad. Rain clothes + dry clothes (one set which you put on and one set if others are wet, you don't need more). Some med kit and if there are poisonous snakes, take some medicine for those.

Phone, Knife, lighter.

EDIT: Belt + some rope.

EDIT2: When you pack your clothes, put those to bin bag/plastic bags before you put those to backpack. If it rains, you want to be sure that you still have your clothes dry.

EDIT3: Deck of cards, small axe. And try to find some place where you are safe from rain at night, tent/something else. Cold + wet is not something which you want to feel at morning.

And if you have good sleeping bag, sleep only underpants on, if you have pants + shirt if will NOT be as warm. If you buy the cheapest one you can get, then it will be different thing.

This.

Nothing sucks more than walking for 6 hours in rain and realizing that all your change clothes are wet.
Also you should bring food, I wouldn't really trust the nature to feed me with fishes and berries.

Edit: also the sleeping in your underwear thing is true.

i agree on water, i think were going to be near a river and 1 of my friend's is bringing a filter, but ill get creative on packing water..

a space blanket is like a aluminum blanket thing, waterproof, windproof, keeps you warm, and is shiny so its good for emergencies

a pocket chainsaw is a chainsaw thats portable haha

we are going to a mountain near a river, conditions get pretty cold at night, snow may even form, but in the day its warm..

1 of my friends is studying to be a park ranger, and has had many backpacking trips and were not doing anything crazy, just getting some air, no kayaking, probably just hike for about 4 days, pitch a tent, eat some good food, so basically just a camping trip..

Better to bring water purification tablets instead of a load of water, after all you do have to carry all that extra weight in water. A hatchet would be extremely useful. Chainsaws of any kind need a power source and you have to lug that around too. Lots of wooden matches, lighters have a habit of disappearing when you need them the most. Beef jerky or any kind of meat jerky for that matter. Pack a lot of dehydrated food for that matter. If you've never roughed it and had to live off what caught or gathered, you could be one hungry camper by the time you get back if you don't take this step.

Travel as light as you can get away with without making unnecessary sacrifices.

Most important thing for me when out camping/backpacking, is to take a hot chick to keep me warm - and other things

There's always that option as well... Besides, digging a hole is a lot of work.

yeah but you would still need to get rid of her, there's a high chance she might go to the cops.

so then you have two choices, do that and then dig a hole. or pull a fritzl.

on topic, great advice has been given so i hope you and your and friends have a great time backpacking! it's a great experience

A mountain near a river? you're in Cali, National park? wilderness area?

In a wilderness area it's a good idea to bring a rifle like Volkov suggested, I backpack in the Trinity Alps NW of Redding, bears and mountain lions run away if you fire a shot. A good knife is probably the most important thing besides the shovel. Good sleeping bag, don't bring a tent, sleep under the stars, and enjoy!

Edit: inform the local ranger as to where you're headed and when you expect to return
